Having been defeated 2-1 by Man City in Sam Allardyce's first game as manager last weekend, Leeds played their first home game under the former England manager. Allardyce's eight-month tenure as Newcastle manager clearly left few fond memories for the Magpies' fans, who had loudly criticized him before the match began.
Newcastle are not yet guaranteed a top-four finish.
In a difficult relegation battle, Leeds got off to a good start. Leeds captain Luke Ayling opened the scoring in the 7th minute in a dramatic encounter with Newcastle. Patrick Bamford missed a penalty that could have given Leeds a two-goal lead in the 28th minute, before Wilson converted to equalize for Newcastle three minutes later. However, the Eland Road side ultimately secured a point with Kristensen's 2-2 equalizer in the 69th minute.
After scoring the goal that earned Leeds a point, the home team finished the match playing with ten men after defender Junior Firpo was sent off for receiving two yellow cards in injury time of the second half.
Leeds are still trying to avoid relegation.
With one point from this match, Leeds moved up one place to 18th and are now one point away from safety. Sam Allardyce's side will travel to West Ham next weekend before hosting Tottenham in their final game of the season. Leeds, winless in seven games, face another tense survival battle after securing their survival in the final round of last season.
For Newcastle, their efforts to qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top four are also faltering. Eddie Howe's side remain in third place, but they are only three points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester United and four points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool. The Magpies have played one more game than Manchester United. Newcastle need six points from their final three matches against Brighton, Leicester, and Chelsea to secure a top-four finish.
