Twenty-seven different humanoid robots have become the center of attention at the ongoing Robot World Exhibition 2024 in Beijing, China. They can exhibit all sorts of human-like interactions and skills, such as making heart gestures or winking at the audience, as well as cooking meals and performing calligraphy.

At this exhibition (held from August 21 to 25), more than 20 Chinese companies showcased humanoid robots designed for work in factories and warehouses, and many even displayed precision components manufactured in China, necessary for building these robots.

Much like its efforts to promote electric vehicles launched more than a decade ago, China is boosting its robotics industry with a formula that combines government support, competitive pricing, and a robust supply chain.

According to Arjen Rao, an analyst at the China-based LeadLeo Research Institute, China's humanoid robotics industry demonstrates clear advantages in supply chain integration and mass production capabilities.

Beijing launched a $1.4 billion state-funded robotics fund in January 2024, while Shanghai also announced plans to establish a $1.4 billion fund for the development of humanoid robots last July.

According to data from Qichacha, a business data platform in China, the country currently has nearly 720,000 businesses related to robotics. Of these, more than 20 are currently producing complete humanoid robot products.

The world's largest industrial robot market.

Many experts predict that 2024 will be a crucial year for "armies" of humanoid robots to leave the laboratory and enter manufacturing plants.

On August 21, China's Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Xin Guobin, stated that the country remains the world's largest market for industrial robots for the 11th consecutive year.

China's industrial robot production reached 430,000 units in 2023, while the number of new robots added to the country accounted for more than half of the global market over the past three years.

As of July 2024, China had over 190,000 effective patents related to robotics, accounting for approximately two-thirds of the global total. Over the past 10 years, the number of robots per 10,000 workers in China's manufacturing sector has increased from 49 to 470.
