Ministry of Health inspects environmental treatment and disease prevention after floods in Da Nang

DNO - On the afternoon of November 3, a working delegation from the Ministry of Health led by Deputy Minister Do Xuan Tuyen inspected the response and recovery work after floods in Da Nang City. Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi chaired the inspection and worked with the delegation.

According to a quick report from the City Department of Health , during the prolonged heavy rain, the city had 61 flooded communes and wards with a total of about 123,109 households; 74,194 wells, 118,400 toilets, 263 public areas (markets, train stations, bus stations...), 191 schools, 43 medical facilities needing medical treatment such as water source disinfection and environmental sanitation.

Some medical facilities were deeply flooded: Quang Nam Regional General Hospital, Duy Xuyen Regional Medical Center, Quang Nam Mental Hospital, 40 medical stations; some places were flooded over 1m (in the areas of Cam Le, Hoa Vang, Dai Loc, Dien Ban, Duy Xuyen, Hoi An, Nong Son).

Immediately after the water receded, the Department of Health urgently directed general environmental sanitation, collected medical waste, and sprayed disinfectants in the flooded areas that had been drained, to prevent the risk of disease outbreaks after the flood.

Mobile medical teams were activated to distribute medicine and disinfectant solutions, instruct people on how to treat domestic water sources, ensure food safety and prevent and control epidemics.

Up to now, Da Nang city has been supported by the Ministry of Health with 100,000 Aquatabs water disinfectant tablets and 2,000 kg of Chloramine B disinfectant chemicals; promptly distributed to medical facilities.

On behalf of the city's leaders, Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi thanked the Ministry of Health for its timely attention and direction; at the same time, affirmed that Da Nang City identified environmental sanitation and disease prevention after floods as urgent tasks.

Faced with the current complicated developments of floods and rains, the City People's Committee continues to direct the health sector to closely coordinate with localities and functional forces to resolutely implement environmental sanitation, water source disinfection, ensure food safety, and prevent epidemics.

At the same time, the Department of Health is assigned to preside over and coordinate with relevant departments and branches to review, update and complete the plan for natural disaster prevention and control, ensuring healthcare according to the motto "4 on-site", flexible "3 ready" (ready facilities, ready human resources, ready means) especially in mountainous areas, remote areas, areas prone to deep flooding and traffic disruption; focusing on ensuring medical logistics: medicines, biological products, oxygen, electricity, water, food, means of transport and essential medical equipment.

Da Nang City requests the Ministry of Health to continue to pay attention and provide professional guidance in medical examination and treatment; preventive medicine; disease prevention, food safety and hygiene after floods; support with materials, chemicals, medicines, medical equipment, especially Cloramin B, Aquatabs to ensure treatment, environmental sanitation and disease prevention in the coming time.

Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen acknowledged and highly appreciated the proactive and urgent spirit of Da Nang city and the city's health sector in responding to and ensuring people's health after floods.

The Deputy Minister of Health emphasized that post-flood medical work plays a particularly important role, not only in treating and taking care of people's health but also contributing to stabilizing life, protecting the environment, and preventing disease outbreaks.

With the city's proposals, the Ministry of Health will consider and provide timely support to help the city restore medical activities and ensure people's health care.

At the meeting, the Ministry of Health donated 50 million VND to the Da Nang City Disaster Prevention and Control Fund; 20 million VND in cash and medicine and medical supplies (worth 850 million VND), and 1,000 disinfection packages for medical facilities.
