Ca Mau: Coastal erosion challenges coastal irrigation system.

In Ca Mau, climate change, rising sea levels, and land subsidence are causing increasingly serious coastal erosion, threatening land, mangrove forests, and irrigation systems.

Climate change, rising sea levels, and land subsidence are exacerbating riverbank and coastal erosion in Ca Mau. This situation not only leads to land and mangrove forest loss but also poses a major challenge to irrigation systems and the livelihoods of people in coastal areas.

In recent years, the Mekong Delta has continuously faced increasing riverbank and coastal erosion. According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the region loses an average of 300-500 hectares of land annually due to erosion, while the average subsidence rate exceeds 1 cm per year. These figures highlight the immense pressure on the irrigation system, highlighting the urgent need for effective response solutions.

Ca Mau, strategically located at the southernmost tip of Vietnam, boasts over 310 km of coastline, with more than 200 km facing severe erosion, ranging from dangerous to extremely dangerous levels. Between 2011 and 2023, the province lost approximately 6,200 hectares of land and mangrove forests. This loss of this "green shield" significantly weakens the ability to protect sea dikes, irrigation systems, and coastal communities.

According to experts, climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters in the Mekong Delta. Mr. Do Duc Dung, former Director of the Southern Irrigation Planning Institute, believes that without timely response measures, landslides, subsidence, and erosion of riverbanks and coastlines will become increasingly serious, having a long-term impact on the sustainable development of the entire region.

Over the years, Ca Mau province has made efforts to invest in its coastal irrigation system. The entire province has constructed 78 km of embankment to prevent erosion, with a total cost of over 2,700 billion VND, contributing to the protection of residents, agricultural land, and many important infrastructure projects. However, due to the strong impact of high tides, large waves, and rising sea levels, many coastal areas still frequently experience erosion.

In reality, coastal areas along the East Sea such as Ho Gui - Bo De, Kien Vang - Ong Ta, and Canal 5 O Ro - Vam Xoay show that strong waves are causing the protective mangrove forest belt to shrink rapidly, resulting in numerous scattered landslides. Given this dangerous situation, the Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee has had to declare a state of emergency in several coastal areas.

The increasingly serious erosion situation shows that the coastal irrigation system of Ca Mau is facing major challenges. This is also an urgent issue, requiring comprehensive and long-term solutions to protect land, mangrove forests, and the livelihoods of people in coastal areas.
