"A fortress against the epidemic" in the heart of Hai Phong's livestock farming region.
In Tan Minh commune (Hai Phong), Mr. Tran Khoa Cuong's pig farm operates on a "no entry, no exit" model, like a sealed biological fortress. Compared to before, he has increased the frequency of disinfection spraying to 2-3 times per day, covering everything from the living area to the entire surrounding perimeter to seal off any "narrow openings" that could allow viruses to enter.
Vehicles transporting feed and supplies are required to stop at the gate for chemical spraying, especially on the undercarriage and tires; drivers and anyone entering or leaving must wear protective clothing, walk through a lime pit, and absolutely avoid approaching the pig pens unless absolutely necessary. "Even a small mistake could cost the entire herd of pigs," Mr. Cuong said.
According to the Hai Phong Department of Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Medicine, the cold and humid weather at the end of the year creates favorable conditions for the virus to spread, so livestock farmers are advised to cover their barns, supplement with vitamins and minerals to increase resistance. In addition, the city requires localities to intensify vaccination, maintain 24/7 monitoring, and strictly handle cases of concealing outbreaks.
Upon detecting the abnormal pig population, the veterinary department immediately took samples and destroyed 31 positive pigs. They also set up quarantine checkpoints, spread lime, and sprayed chemicals to create a "clean zone." Despite the localized resurgence of the disease, the total pig population in the city remains stable at over 130,000. Agricultural leaders affirmed that shifting from "fighting the epidemic" to "proactive disease prevention" is key to ensuring supply for the Lunar New Year.
