"Violette lip-syncing" became a popular phrase on Thai social media after the controversial opening night of the 33rd SEA Games.

Specifically, famous singer Violette Wautier was the "chosen one" to perform first at the opening ceremony.

But what the audience heard was a truly disastrous performance, as the singer sang off-key, leaving fans in other countries bewildered about the reputation of one of Thailand's leading artists today.

The truth was later revealed by Thai media. According to Khaosod newspaper, Violette was originally assigned by the organizers to "lip-sync 100%" at the opening ceremony, but a microphone malfunction exposed everything, turning the 32-year-old singer's performance into a disaster.

On the night of December 9, singer Violette posted a detailed account of the incident to explain her disastrous performance.

"From today's opening performance at the 2025 SEA Games, many people must have noticed Vee (as Violette calls herself) singing off-key on live broadcast. Honestly, I'm very upset, and what happened was a real mistake."

According to Violette, the opening night organizers decided that she and the two other singers would perform lip-syncing due to technical reasons.

When she goes on stage to perform, Violette's headphones don't have live vocals, so she "can't hear her own voice".

"However, understanding that lip-syncing was necessary, Vee did her best to ensure the best possible image. But what happened was, I don't know where the misunderstanding occurred, when Vee's microphone was broadcast live," Violette explained.

This explains Violette's "off-key" singing throughout the show, as she was lip-syncing and couldn't hear the live sound.

"Honestly, I feel like my reputation, image, dignity, career, and even my dreams have been ruined. At this point, Vee can't do anything anymore because the show is over, but at least, I want to use this platform to defend myself, to the best of my ability."

Throughout my singing career, I've rarely lip-synced. Therefore, I feel sad because if I could sing live, even if it was bad, I would be happier because it would be showcasing my talent.

We didn't even get a chance to do that. They wanted me to lip-sync, but in the end, they turned on the mic but covered my ears. If I knew that I couldn't hear it when I was singing live, I would have taken my ears off to listen or tried to do something to sing as well as I could. But I never got that chance," Violette said.

The opening ceremony of the 33rd SEA Games was plagued by incidents, from the display of a flawed map of Vietnam, the incorrect display of the Indonesian flag (mistakenly the Singaporean flag), to this lip-syncing scandal.
