At the Can Tho City People's Council meeting on the morning of December 10th, the Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee, Truong Canh Tuyen, delivered a speech providing further explanations on several issues of concern to the delegates.
Proposal to create a "food valley" in the Mekong Delta.
Regarding the issue raised by city council representatives about solutions to enhance the value of agricultural products, Mr. Tuyen acknowledged that in the past, the city's agricultural products were mainly exported in raw form, with very few factories engaging in deep processing.
Therefore, from March 2025, the city, Can Tho University and some Japanese organizations such as JETRO, EAON MALL and Takesho Company organized a launch on "Make in Mekong products" - creating a deep value chain of agricultural products and just conducted an 8-month review, the Japanese partner has proposed a number of products that can be put into deep processing in the near future.
"In particular, Can Tho University has come up with a good idea of creating a food valley - a deep processing center for the Mekong Delta and the whole country for agricultural products in the city. Regarding this issue, we will continue to research to supplement and adjust the city planning in the coming time.
We also collaborated with the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , and the ministry initially agreed to establish the OCOP Association of the Mekong Delta region, located in Can Tho city.
Recently, many OCOP products, even after being recognized with 3 or 4 stars, still experience poor sales, low commercialization efficiency, and have not been able to maintain sustainable brand recognition.
"We will reorganize the City's Economic Research Institute to take on this task, and at the same time, commission the unit to research solutions to promote the deep processing of agricultural products in the future," Mr. Tuyen said.
By the end of January or beginning of February 2026, a radiotherapy machine will be available for the Oncology Hospital.
Also in his explanatory speech, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen provided further information on the progress of restarting the Can Tho Oncology Hospital project.
Accordingly, on November 14th, immediately after the City People's Council passed the resolution adjusting the investment plan, the City People's Committee held a meeting with the construction units that same afternoon. "I recently requested immediate implementation, without waiting for the project adjustment; the project adjustment will continue to be carried out," he said.
At the same time, the city is also implementing the Prime Minister's directive to purchase two radiotherapy machines to serve the existing Oncology Hospital. One of the two machines has been completed and is expected to arrive at the hospital at the end of January or beginning of February.
The City People's Committee also asked for the opinion of the Standing Committee of the Can Tho City Party Committee to agree to use the budget reserve to continue investing in the second machine according to the Prime Minister's direction, to be completed in the first quarter of 2026 to install all two treatment machines for patients in Can Tho in particular and the Mekong Delta in general.
