Universities in the race for international quality accreditation

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí01/11/2024

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Universities need to strive to improve and ensure the quality of education ; this is a top priority when pursuing international accreditation programs.

This information was shared at the 7th Internationalization of Higher Education Forum, organized by the Foreign Trade University on November 1st in Hanoi .

According to Associate Professor Pham Thu Huong, Vice Rector of the Foreign Trade University, international accreditation offers certain benefits to educational institutions.

However, to meet the requirements of international quality accreditation, universities must first ensure quality. This is the journey towards gradually achieving international educational standards.

At the same time, schools need a clear roadmap to build quality that meets international standards.

"After familiarizing themselves with accreditation standards, Vietnamese universities are now beginning to develop strategic orientations towards adopting international standards."

As can be seen, this trend is currently developing strongly, and this poses a challenge for domestic schools to gain recognition from international organizations.

However, I think the process of achieving international quality accreditation is important.

"Universities need to strive and improve to achieve quality education; that's what universities should prioritize when pursuing international accreditation programs," Associate Professor Pham Thu Huong shared.

Regarding the trend of international cooperation among universities, Associate Professor Pham Thu Huong believes that, in the current period of rapid development, leveraging international development in education is very important.

Therefore, we should promote all areas where opportunities can be leveraged, and this will be the driving force for domestic universities to cooperate and develop internationally.

Especially in areas where we have strengths or where we wish to develop, international cooperation helps us move faster and more effectively towards achieving growth targets.

"International cooperation is a long-term process, and the parties involved build trust with each other. That's why, from the very beginning, we have had a strong commitment."

Therefore, the journey of building trust and jointly exploiting new resources is effective in the development of education in Vietnam," Associate Professor Thu Huong affirmed.

Regarding this, Professor Julia Gaimster, Vice-Chancellor of RMIT University Vietnam, stated that Vietnamese higher education institutions are striving to ensure the highest quality.

For accreditation programs, domestic educational institutions must comply with Vietnamese regulations.

At the forum, Associate Professor Bui Anh Tuan, Rector of the Foreign Trade University, stated that international branches play a crucial role in providing high-quality higher education.

International branches provide students with access to high-quality international education without having to leave their home country. However, establishing and operating international branches is not an easy task.

Many higher education institutions in Vietnam are striving to expand their facilities but are limited by resources, while international higher education institutions wishing to establish branches face considerable difficulties.

This is one of the reasons why the Foreign Trade University organizes the internationalization forum, aiming to share knowledge and experience on innovative models in international cooperation in higher education.

At the forum, guests discussed opportunities, as well as challenges and promising future directions for establishing international branches in developing countries, including Vietnam.

According to statistics from the Quality Management Department of the Ministry of Education and Training , as of December 31, 2023, there were 187 educational institutions nationwide recognized as meeting domestic quality standards, and 9 educational institutions meeting foreign quality standards.

Thus, out of a total of 244 higher education institutions (not including educational institutions belonging to the military and police sectors), currently the whole country has 187/244 educational institutions recognized as meeting educational quality standards according to domestic standards.

About 57 higher education institutions have not been accredited or recognized as meeting standards (according to domestic standards).
