Emergency treatment for a girl with hypocalcemia on a plane: On that flight, I wasn't just a doctor.

"I relived the initial feeling that led me to choose this profession: saving lives, using only my heart and my two hands. The moment the baby lay on the stretcher, turning its head to look back, tears welling up as if wanting to say thank you. I will never forget it," Dr. Tien said.

On the morning of July 1st, the board of directors of the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital commended and rewarded two doctors for their timely intervention in saving a young girl suffering from hypocalcemia on a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi.

According to the management board of the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, the actions of the two doctors are a testament to the dedication, solid expertise, and medical ethics of the hospital's staff.

Whether in hospitals or in the community, the mission of protecting people's health is always our top priority.

Earlier, on June 26th, while the flight was in mid-flight, a girl around 12-13 years old suddenly had seizures, her skin turned blue, and she was at risk of respiratory arrest due to acute hypocalcemia.

Faced with a critical situation, Dr. Nguyen Van Tien - head of the gynecological surgery department, and Dr. Pham Ngoc Trung immediately arrived and coordinated with the flight attendants and crew to provide emergency care.

Despite lacking specialized medical equipment, the two doctors calmly handled the situation, utilizing whatever resources were available on the plane to help stabilize the girl temporarily, overcoming the danger until landing and transfer to a medical facility.

Dr. Tien added that in this situation, he loudly called out in the airplane cabin, "Does anyone have any calcium effervescent tablets? The kind commonly used in sports ?" About a minute later, a passenger brought out a tube of effervescent tablets containing calcium.

The doctor mixed the medicine with water for the baby to drink, while closely monitoring vital signs and ruling out other possibilities such as asthma. Fortunately, just a few minutes later, the baby's pulse stabilized, her skin gradually turned pink, her breathing became more regular, and she opened her eyes and grasped the doctor's hand.

"On that flight, I wasn't just a doctor. I relived the first feeling that made me choose this profession: saving lives, using only my heart and my hands. The moment the baby lay on the stretcher, turning its head back, tears welling up as if wanting to say thank you. I will never forget that moment," Dr. Tien shared.
