The Vietnamese couple in blue berets come to Abyei to contribute their youthful energy.

TPO - Along with more than 180 comrades from the 3rd Engineering Battalion, Captain Hoang Huu Cong Thanh and his wife are embarking on a United Nations peacekeeping mission at the UNISFA mission in the Abyei region. This international mission coincides with their first wedding anniversary.

Among the 184 green beret soldiers of the 3rd Engineering Brigade undertaking this mission, Captain Hoang Huu Cong Thanh (born in 1994) and Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Thi Nguyet Ha (born in 1996) are the first married couple to serve together as part of a Vietnamese Engineering Brigade in Africa. Captain Hoang Huu Cong Thanh and his wife shared their determination to successfully fulfill their United Nations peacekeeping mission at the UNISF mission. Before their departure, the couple shared that they are both from Hai Duong province and work at the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department. They got married in September 2023. Captain Thanh previously served a term (2022-2023) as a Military Observer at the UNMISS mission in South Sudan, while Lieutenant Ha is participating in this special mission for the first time. “I joined the Army six years ago, half the length of my husband’s military service. At Abyei, I will be serving as an Administrative and Financial Officer, while my husband is a Civilian-Military Coordination Officer for the 3rd Engineering Battalion. In addition to the necessary knowledge and skills from pre-deployment training, my husband has also provided me with practical experience, especially survival skills in challenging environments, thanks to his participation in UN peacekeeping missions in the field,” Lieutenant Ha confided.

Continuing his wife's remarks, Captain Thanh said that their plan to accompany him to Abyei was wholeheartedly supported and encouraged by both families. Captain Thanh said: “Going on an international mission together on our first wedding anniversary is a great honor and source of pride. We consider this a valuable experience and an opportunity to contribute our youthful energy to the country and the international community. After completing the mission and returning home, my wife and I will have children to build a happier family.”
