According to a spokesperson for South Korean tech giant Samsung, co-CEO Han Jong-Hee of Samsung Electronics passed away suddenly at the age of 63 on March 25.
Han Jong-Hee, born in 1962, has been in charge of Samsung's mobile and consumer electronics division since 2022.
He was appointed vice president and co-CEO of Samsung Electronics in 2022. Han's co-CEO, Jun Young-Hyun, heads the company's semiconductor business.
Samsung has faced significant challenges in recent years, with its semiconductor business lagging behind Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the industry leader in contract chip manufacturing, both in ramping up production of advanced chips and retaining major customers.
According to Reuters, at his annual meeting with investors last week, Han Jong-Hee warned of a difficult 2025 due to uncertainties surrounding the economic policies of major economies.
He also added that Samsung will be looking for "meaningful" mergers and acquisitions this year to support the company's growth.
"There are some challenges in executing semiconductor M&A deals due to differing regulations in various countries, but we are determined to produce some tangible results this year," he said.
Han Jong-Hee joined the company in 1988 after graduating from the Electrical Engineering department at Inha University in South Korea. Before heading Samsung's electronics and equipment division, he was in charge of the display division.
According to Samsung's assessment, Mr. Han played a crucial role in bringing Samsung's television business to the top of the global market in 2006 and maintaining that position to this day.
Mr. Han played a "central role" in the launch of Samsung's LED TVs, and along with other innovations, he helped the company "continuously demonstrate its technological leadership," the company added.
