Before Donald Trump returned to the White House, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met for the last time on November 16 at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Peru.

The meeting lasted about two hours at the Chinese delegation's hotel in Lima and marked the first dialogue in seven months between the two leaders, according to Reuters on November 17.
"China remains committed to the goal of a stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship, and aims to achieve a smooth transition in bilateral relations," Xi said.
The leader acknowledged that there have been ups and downs in bilateral relations, but China is willing to work with the new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation and manage differences.
According to President Joe Biden, the two US and Chinese leaders do not always agree, but their discussions are always frank and honest.
"Our two countries cannot allow any bilateral competition to degenerate into conflict," President Biden stressed.
The meeting took place two months before US President-elect Donald Trump took office and was also the third meeting between President Biden and President Xi.
Mr. Trump once announced that he would impose a 60% tax on imported goods from China, leading to protests from Beijing.
President-elect Trump also announced several nominations for officials with a "hard" stance on China, such as Senator Marco Rubio as secretary of state and Congressman Mike Waltz as national security adviser.
