On the afternoon of May 22nd, at the Presidential Palace, President Vo Van Thuong received Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the United Russia Party and Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, who is on an official visit to Vietnam from May 21-23.

Welcoming Mr. Dmitry Medvedev and the high-level delegation of the Russian Federation to Vietnam, President Vo Van Thuong assessed the significance of this visit as an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on the orientations of Vietnam-Russia cooperation in general, including cooperation between the two Parties and the two States.

Expressing his pleasure at visiting Vietnam again, Chairman of the United Russia Party Dmitry Medvedev affirmed that the Russian Federation highly values its comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam; senior leaders of the Russian Federation, including the United Russia Party, are interested in developing relations with Vietnam as one of their top priorities, and Vietnam is an important partner of Russia in the region.

President Vo Van Thuong affirmed that Vietnam consistently pursues an independent, self-reliant, multilateral, and diversified foreign policy; always remembers the support and assistance that the people of the former Soviet Union gave to Vietnam in the cause of national construction and defense; values the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia, and wishes to continue developing the traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia for the benefit of the development of both countries and the prosperity of both peoples.

In a friendly atmosphere, President Vo Van Thuong and Chairman of the United Russia Party Dmitry Medvedev welcomed the key achievements in cooperation over the past period, especially in the fields of economy and trade, science, education and training, and local cooperation.

On this occasion, President Vo Van Thuong thanked Russia for continuing to provide annual scholarships for Vietnamese students to study at Russian educational institutions; and expressed confidence that the 4th Session of the Vietnam-Russia Cooperation Committee on Education, Science and Technology, scheduled to be held at the end of this year, will continue to open up many new opportunities for cooperation in this field.

The two leaders agreed that in the coming period they will continue to promote people-to-people exchanges, including among the younger generation; and enhance the role of friendship associations between the two countries, in order to strengthen understanding and preserve the fine values of the traditional friendship with a history of nearly 75 years.

During the meeting, President Vo Van Thuong expressed his gratitude and requested that the Russian leaders, government, and the United Russia Party continue to pay attention to and create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community in Russia to live, work, and study in a long-term and stable manner.

On this occasion, President Vo Van Thuong also sent his greetings to President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation.
