Nhi’s situation makes many people feel sorry. Her father died early, she lives with her mother and grandmother. Her grandmother is old and weak, often sick, while Nhi’s mother’s income from a factory worker’s salary is only enough to get by.

Seeing Major Phan Thi Kim Oanh, President of the Women's Union of Regiment 4 from afar, Nhi ran over to greet politely. Holding tightly onto the notebook and new set of books given by her "godmothers", Nhi's eyes lit up with emotion. Talking to us, Nhi innocently said: "Mother Oanh and the female soldiers always care, encourage, and help me both materially and spiritually. I will try to be a good boy and study well so as not to let them down."

Major Phan Thi Kim Oanh talks with Dinh Thi Yen Nhi and her mother.

The "Godmother" program was implemented by Division 5 in 2021. From the very first day of implementation, the Women's Union of Regiment 4 sponsored Yen Nhi, partially supported her with financial support and regularly encouraged her to study with peace of mind and complete her primary school program. Not only Nhi, currently the Women's Unions of Division 5 are sponsoring 11 other children in especially difficult circumstances, orphaned or lacking care.

Sharing about the program implementation process, Major Phan Thi Kim Oanh said: “In order for the program to spread widely and sustainably, we actively mobilize members, officers, soldiers, and philanthropists to participate. Every month, the unit organizes a delegation to visit, give gifts, and encourage the children. Up to now, the program has brought practical results, left many good emotional impressions and received high appreciation from local Party committees and authorities.”

From the unit's budget and the support of benefactors, the care for orphans is maintained regularly. Every month, the women's associations in the Division donate food and provisions from the unit's production resources and support 500,000 VND in cash for each child. At the beginning of the school year, the associations buy textbooks, notebooks, and clothes; and on holidays and Tet, the children receive candy, food, and gifts to somewhat reduce the burden on their families.

Not only providing material support, the women's associations also regularly talk and encourage the children, creating a warm feeling like family love. Many children who were shy and self-conscious are now more confident, more open and have a sense of striving in their studies. This concern has helped the small, unfortunate lives have more spiritual support to move forward.

The flame of love lit by the “Godmother” Program in Division 5 has truly become a bridge of love connecting the military and civilian relationship. The visits and simple but meaningful gifts have helped to ease the pain, help the children rise up in life and nurture their dreams./.
