For those with a master's degree, research experience is required, demonstrated through a master's thesis of a research-oriented training program, or published scientific articles and reports, or 2 years or more of working experience as a lecturer at training institutions or scientific and technological organizations.

In addition, to become a doctoral candidate, one must have a diploma or certificate proving foreign language proficiency, specifically a university degree or higher issued by a foreign training institution, a branch of a foreign training institution in Vietnam or a Vietnamese training institution for full-time students in English; or a diploma in English language issued by a Vietnamese training institution or an English certificate as prescribed.

The training period for master's graduates is at least 3 years and for university graduates is 4 years.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, the above regulations are stipulated in the circular promulgating the regulations on enrollment and training for doctoral degrees of the Ministry of Education and Training. "According to the regulations, the minimum time to get a doctorate degree is 3-4 years, so there is no such thing as studying ahead to graduate earlier," Dr. Trung Nhan shared.

The head of the training department of a university in Ho Chi Minh City also said that it takes a minimum of 4 years for a bachelor to study straight to a doctorate. "Although the regulation allows doctoral students to complete their training program no more than 1 year (12 months) earlier than planned, in reality, it is rare for anyone to graduate 1 year early, let alone 2 years early," the head of the department said.

According to this person, it is also very rare for people to graduate from university and go straight to doctorate because being a doctoral student is very hard, requires capacity and a process. "With a bachelor's degree, you have to go step by step, it is difficult to become a doctoral student in a period of 2-3 years to complete a doctorate, especially in fields like law," the head of the department commented.
