Amazon plans to cut up to 30,000 office workers

According to Reuters , Amazon will start cutting about 30,000 office positions starting this week. This number accounts for nearly 10% of the company's total of about 350,000 office workers and is the largest cut since 2022.

Amazon is trying to cut costs after a hiring spree during the pandemic. CEO Andy Jassy wants to reduce bloated management and increase the use of artificial intelligence to automate repetitive tasks.

The cuts could impact multiple departments, including human resources (PXT), operations, facilities, services, and even Amazon Web Services. Some managers have been trained to notify employees via email starting Tuesday.

Amazon’s program requiring employees to return to the office five days a week has not produced the expected number of departures. Some employees who do not come in regularly are considered to have quit and are not entitled to severance pay.

While AWS remains the most profitable segment, revenue growth has slowed compared to rivals like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

US judge dismisses class action lawsuit against Apple

On October 27, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in California, USA, overturned a previous decision allowing tens of millions of Apple users to sue the company for alleged App Store monopoly.

Users previously accused Apple of prohibiting app purchases outside the App Store, leading to higher prices. The lawsuit covers people who have spent at least $10 on apps or in-app content since 2008.

The judge said the plaintiffs failed to provide a credible model to prove general damages. An expert hired by Apple found serious errors in the data, including confusing two people with similar names and combining more than 40,000 unrelated transactions by someone named “Kim.”

The plaintiffs' lawyers expressed disappointment and are considering their next legal steps. Meanwhile, Apple said it was pleased with the ruling and affirmed that the App Store is a safe place for users and a good opportunity for developers.

If the lawsuit is upheld, it could result in billions of dollars in damages. However, with the dismissal, users will have to sue individually if they want to continue.

Google Pixel is getting “theme packs” in the November update

A new leak suggests that Google will be rolling out “theme packs” to Pixel phones in the November update. This is part of the “Feature Drop” program – where Google periodically adds new features to the Pixel line.

This theme pack includes themes like “For Good”, “Glinda” and “Elphaba”. When selected by the user, the phone will automatically change the wallpaper, icons, sounds and GIFs to match the theme.

Users will be able to turn any image into an animated GIF or sticker through the Pixel Studio app. A demo video shows that you can enter text to create an image, then press the “Animate image” button to turn it into an animated image.

The Pixel VIP feature, which launched in June, will be enhanced to prioritize notifications from VIP contacts in Google Messages and WhatsApp. Messages from VIPs will be highlighted in yellow and have their profile picture displayed in the status bar.

According to leaked screenshots, the update will be released on November 4 – right in line with Google's annual update schedule.
