On July 1st, Dak Nong province received official notification from the Earth Sciences and Geological Risk Reduction Division of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that the Dak Nong Geopark had successfully passed the reassessment process and was officially recognized as the "UNESCO Dak Nong Global Geopark" for the new development phase 2024-2027.
The decision to re-recognize Dak Nong as a UNESCO Global Geopark is expected to be awarded to Dak Nong province at the International Conference on the Asia- Pacific Regional Geopark Network, to be held in September 2024 at the UNESCO Non Nuoc Cao Bang Global Geopark, Vietnam.
The UNESCO Dak Nong Global Geopark covers an area of 4,760 km2, spanning six districts and cities. It boasts a unique volcanic cave system, the longest in Southeast Asia, where traces of prehistoric habitation have been discovered. It is also a land of diverse cultures, home to over 40 ethnic groups, and is part of the "Gong Culture Space of the Central Highlands"—a masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
According to Ms. Ton Thi Ngoc Hanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dak Nong province, the decision to recognize Dak Nong as a UNESCO Global Geopark for the period 2024-2027 is not only an acknowledgment of the efforts of the government and people of Dak Nong in the conservation and overall promotion of the value of various types of heritage, but also opens up opportunities to attract resources for sustainable socio -economic development.
"The province's challenge in receiving the title again is to address UNESCO's recommendations. There are 41 sites with 3 tourist routes: The Epic of Fire and Water, The Echoes of the Earth, and The Symphony of the New Wind. Therefore, while nature and potential are important, people and services, and everything else, need to be infused with soul to preserve and develop them," said Ms. Ton Thi Ngoc Hanh.
