Veteran experts like Jim Keller ( left ) will help Japan boost AI chip development.

Rapidus was founded 18 months ago by a group of investors with the goal of setting up a 2nm chip production line in Japan by 2027. This would allow the company to become a direct competitor to major manufacturers such as TSMC and Samsung, although Rapidus has no customers yet. Rapidus's technology partners are IBM (USA), Imec Research Center (Belgium) and the Leti Institute (France).

The Japanese government is reportedly funding a range of projects from research to advanced AI chip production, with a $67 billion investment plan to regain its core position in the semiconductor industry. The partnership with Tenstorrent will help accelerate these efforts.

Jim Keller is a legend in the semiconductor industry and a "chip master" in Silicon Valley. With his outstanding work ability, he has left a big mark on the technology giants. In more than 30 years of working in the profession, his mark has spread throughout the big companies in Silicon Valley, leading the design and development of many different generations of processors. He is the designer of the A-series chip for Apple, the father of AMD's Zen processor architecture and the creator of the self-driving car chip for Tesla.

After resigning from Intel in June 2020, Keller joined AI chip startup Tenstorrent as chief technology officer. He will become CEO of the company in January 2023.

In addition to Keller, Tenstorrent includes 13-year AMD veteran Keith Witek and chief chip architect Wei Han Lien, who led Apple's efforts to push its in-house chip designs into iPhones, iPads, and even Macs. Tenstorrent's team of about 400 people includes other industry veterans with experience at AMD and Apple.
