Here are three daily habits that Deborah Szekely shared with CNBC Make It. These are the secrets to her continued health and happiness.
Daily exercise
Ms. Szekely always tries to walk a mile every day. She shared, " I can't go to sleep until I've finished my walk. It's not a rigid habit, it's just something I need to do, like waking up in the morning ."
She also advised finding active friends to join you for daily walks, making it easier to achieve your daily activity goals.
Although her walking intensity is lower than when she was younger, it is still effective. Natural exercise through low-intensity physical activity like walking is a common habit among long-lived people.
Limit your consumption of red meat.
Ms. Szekely has followed a plant-based diet since childhood. “ I prefer fish and seafood. My parents never forced me to eat meat,” she says. Her eating habits are similar to the Mediterranean diet, focusing on whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and fish.
The three meals that Mrs. Szekeli usually ate included:
Breakfast: Yogurt, banana, and whole-grain cereal.
Lunch: There's always salad when she's at home, but if she's eating out with family and friends, she likes to try different dishes and isn't overly restrictive with her diet.
Dinner: Since she often eats out with friends, Mrs. Szekely will usually opt for fish, salad, baked potatoes, or try something new.
Always be sociable and eager to learn.
Szekely's social activities are quite extensive. She says, "I have season tickets to plays at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. I go to the theater regularly and I love opera."
She also regularly gives speeches at her resort every Wednesday, socializing with guests several times a week. Beyond her social activities, she is always eager to learn more. Ms. Szekeli speaks four languages and is immersed in diverse cultures.
