Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan (86 years old) - Vice President of the Vietnam Philosophy Association, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Philosophical Research, is one of the first people to be formally trained at the Faculty of Philosophy, Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Up to now, Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan has had more than 60 years of research and teaching, many years as Chairman of the Interdisciplinary Professor Council of Philosophy - Sociology - Political Science , and member of the State Professor Council.
As one of the first people to establish and teach philosophy in natural sciences at major philosophy training institutions in Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City, he has a deep understanding of both Eastern and Western philosophy, from ancient to modern.
Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan's research works on Marxist-Leninist philosophy and philosophical issues related to people, culture, ethics, and sustainable development in Vietnam always have a unique, sharp and practical mark.
In the memories of many generations of students, the image of Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan appears with seriousness in science, but also extremely warm and close in daily life. Many have become prestigious scientists and teachers, continuing the glorious career that he has worked hard to cultivate. They not only learned from him professional knowledge, but more importantly, learned scientific thinking methods, a serious working spirit and above all, the personality of a true intellectual - modest, simple, always devoted to the cause of education and scientific research.
Perhaps, the greatest happiness of a teacher is nothing more than seeing his students succeed and continue the flame of passion. And Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan has achieved that complete happiness. The legacy he left behind is not only in his monumental scientific works, but also lives vividly in the hearts and minds of thousands of students, who are day and night dedicating themselves to the development of the country.
Big heart worries about nation and times
Philosophy for Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan has never been a mere theory far removed from reality. On the contrary, it is always closely connected to life, to the burning issues of the country and the times.
On May 15, 2025, in Hanoi, Professor and Doctor Nguyen Trong Chuan received the A prize - The 4th Writing Contest on Protecting the Party's Ideological Foundation in the New Situation - with the work "Respecting integrity, knowing how to maintain face and prestige before the people is the political responsibility of cadres and Party members today".
He is one of the pioneering philosophers in researching and proposing theoretical solutions for the renovation process, for socio-economic development, building a rule-of-law state and international integration of Vietnam.
"Doing scientific research requires time and dedication. It's very hard! But the journey we take will certainly be recognized" - Professor, Dr. Nguyen Trong Chuan emphasized.
Looking back, reality has confirmed the Professor's words with the book "The Methodological Role of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy in the Development of Natural Sciences" winning the Social Science Committee Award, 1977; the book "Philosophy - Natural Science - Scientific and Technological Revolution", published in Russian and Vietnamese, Moscow Progress Publishing House, 1986, winning the Soviet Institute of Philosophy Award.
Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan's life of dedication was also recognized when he won 4 awards from the Communist Magazine, 2 National Journalism Awards and 1 award from the 4th writing contest "Protecting the Party's Ideological Foundation in the New Situation".
In addition, the book "Some issues on Philosophy - Human - Society", Social Sciences Publishing House, 2002. With 884 pages, in addition to the introduction and conclusion, the book is divided into 4 main parts. Part 1 - The methodological role of philosophy and some general issues. Part 2 - The relationship between philosophy and natural science. Some philosophical issues in biology. Part 3 - Philosophy and the issue of human resource training. Part 4 - Philosophy and the cause of national renewal.
The book is really helpful for philosophical research and teaching, for theoretical researchers and practical activities.
In addition, the Professor's papers at scientific conferences, articles in specialized journals on philosophy and Party building, and contributions to policy-making agencies always demonstrate a far-sighted vision and a high sense of responsibility. He is not afraid of confrontation, does not avoid thorny issues, but always frankly points out the shortcomings and challenges, and at the same time suggests directions and feasible solutions.
Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan shared that he was one of the first people to write about environmental protection in the 1970s and now the environment is an urgent issue for the country. In the 1990s, the professor also commented that "Our country is falling into a socio-economic crisis", which led to the 9th Congress of the Party stating that "Our country has escaped from the socio-economic crisis".
This also means that perhaps the teacher's biggest concern is how to make philosophy truly enter life, become a compass for action, contribute to improving people's knowledge, and build a fair, democratic, and civilized society.
Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan always emphasizes the role of philosophy in shaping the value system, building the Party's ideological foundation, and building the spirit for the country's sustainable development.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that, more than a scientist, Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan is also a passionate patriot. That love is not expressed through empty slogans, but through silent, persistent contributions to science, education and the cause of Party building. He has lived a life devoted to the country's science, just like Ho Chi Minh's ideology and Marxism-Leninism that he has devoted himself to researching and propagating.
