Viet Duc Hospital has just reported on a special case where doctors saved the life of a male student who was critically injured after a steel bar pierced his face.
Earlier, on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, a 16-year-old male student was impaled by a 3-meter-long iron bar that pierced his head, face, and neck – an area with many vital blood vessels and nerves; a deviation of just a few centimeters could have resulted in his immediate death.
At the lower-level hospital, doctors shortened the iron bar, secured the foreign object, and temporarily stopped the bleeding, creating a safe environment for transfer to a higher-level facility.
At Viet Duc Hospital, an internal emergency alert was activated immediately that night, mobilizing multiple specialties such as Maxillofacial Surgery-Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, Anesthesia-Resuscitation, Spinal Surgery, Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgery, and Diagnostic Imaging to hold a consultation to find the best treatment plan.
After a surgery lasting over an hour, the doctors safely removed the foreign object, preserving as much anatomical structure and function as possible in the facial area—a region with a high concentration of important nerves and sensory organs.
Thanks to this, patients not only escape death but also have the opportunity to recover almost completely in terms of aesthetics and facial motor function.
