Economic development should be linked to the advantages of each region.
Phuoc Long commune was established by merging Phuoc Long commune, Phuoc Long town, and Vinh Phu Dong commune. It covers an area of over 98 km² and has a population of over 47,000 people. Notably, the average per capita income currently reaches 112 million VND/year, reflecting the positive transformation in production and living standards of the local people.
Woven products from Truc Xanh Cooperative (My 1 hamlet, Phuoc Long commune) are popular with many customers.
Over the years, the commune government has guided the development of many economic models suitable to the natural conditions, such as shrimp-rice farming, planting seasonal flowers in the fields, growing VietGAP-certified glutinous corn, and raising eels without mud ... These models not only make good use of the potential of the land and environment but also bring clear economic benefits, helping people stabilize their income.
Mr. Doan Van Gia, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuoc Long commune, said : “To further improve people's income, the commune is reviewing the potential and advantages of each area and hamlet to have specific development orientations. The goal is to achieve an average per capita income of 155 million VND or more by 2030. Along with agriculture , the commune will focus on developing the private economy in accordance with Resolution 68 of the Politburo, considering this an important driving force to improve people's lives.”
Alongside developing production, the commune also focuses on investing in electricity, roads, schools, and health stations, creating favorable conditions for daily life, production, and trade. Ms. To Thi Hanh, residing in Phuoc Hoa Tien hamlet, shared: “Now, with well-maintained roads and a complete electricity grid, people clearly see the government's concern, so they feel more secure investing in production. Before, we only had enough to eat, but now many families have accumulated savings and purchased additional machinery to expand their scale.”
Towards sustainable income
The roads in Phuoc Long commune have been well-invested in, creating favorable conditions for the daily lives and production activities of the people.
Besides its agricultural strengths, Phuoc Long commune is also notable for its bamboo and rattan weaving, a traditional craft that has existed for over 100 years. Despite difficulties in product distribution, hundreds of households persevere in the craft, improving designs to meet market demands. Bamboo and rattan weaving not only helps people increase their income during the agricultural off-season but also contributes to preserving the traditional cultural identity of their homeland.
Mr. Pham Van Dat, Deputy Director of Truc Xanh Cooperative (My 1 Hamlet, Phuoc Long Commune), said: “Although the weaving craft faces difficulties in terms of market demand, it still helps many households stabilize their lives. On average, each person can earn from 70,000 to 100,000 VND per day, depending on the stage of production. Many children also help their parents after school, earning extra income while preserving the craft. The cooperative is striving to connect with the market and find ways to sell products so that the traditional craft can continue to develop.”
The people of Phuoc Long commune have preserved the craft of weaving bamboo and rattan for over 100 years.
Maintaining and promoting the craft of weaving not only creates sustainable livelihoods but also links economic development with the preservation of local culture. This is an important direction in building advanced new rural areas. At the same time, increasing people's income is also a consistent goal in the new rural development program in Phuoc Long. With the consensus of the government and the people, the commune is gradually achieving clear results: income is increasing, living standards are improving, and the rural landscape is changing day by day.
In the coming period, Phuoc Long commune will continue to exploit its natural advantages, replicate effective production models, strengthen market linkages, and create conditions for the strong development of the private economy. These are necessary steps for Phuoc Long to increase people's income, aim towards the goal of a model new rural area, affirm the locality's position in the overall development process, and contribute to the successful achievement of the province's socio-economic development goals.
