Hanoi University of Industry has established a School of Mechanical Engineering - Automotive, with the goal of becoming a university by 2025.
On August 5th, Hanoi University of Industry announced the establishment of the School of Mechanical Engineering - Automotive Technology, based on the merger of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Automotive Technology. These two faculties have a long history and are leading units in training, research, and technology transfer.
This is also the first Automotive Engineering school affiliated with a university in the country. Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Tien Dung, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty, has been appointed as the rector of the Automotive Engineering school.
The departments within the Automotive Engineering School include: Automotive Engineering Technology, Automotive Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, Industrial Systems Engineering, Mold Engineering Technology, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, and Mechanical Design and Industrial Design. The total enrollment quota for this year is 1,350.

Thus far, Hanoi University of Industry has two member schools: the School of Foreign Languages and Tourism (established in December 2021) and the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automotive Engineering. The goal is to develop into Hanoi University of Industry by 2025, with 3-5 affiliated schools.
Currently, there are six universities nationwide: Vietnam National University, Hanoi; Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City; Thai Nguyen University; Hue University; Da Nang University ; and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
According to the 2018 Higher Education Law, a university is defined as a multidisciplinary institution that trains and conducts research in multiple fields, which belong to one or several areas. In contrast, a multidisciplinary university comprises numerous constituent colleges and faculties. To be recognized as a university, institutions must meet three conditions: be legally accredited and assessed as meeting quality standards; have at least three colleges and 10 doctoral programs, with over 15,000 full-time students; and receive approval from the direct management agency and investors.
Dr. Kieu Xuan Thuc, Rector of Hanoi University of Industry, believes that developing into a university is an opportunity to innovate the structure and governance system, and to focus resources on effective development.
"The establishment of schools within universities helps to promote decentralization and delegation of power to each unit, fostering autonomy to innovate, improve the quality of training and scientific research, and develop the staff and faculty," Mr. Thuc said.
Hanoi University of Industry currently trains 32,000 students, placing it among the leading universities in the country in terms of training scale. Each year, the university enrolls over 7,000-7,500 undergraduate students.
