On October 10, the United Nations General Assembly met to elect 15 new members of the Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2024-2026 term, including Indonesia, Kuwait, China, Japan, Cuba, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands, France, Albania, Bulgaria, Malawi, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Burundi.
Of these, Indonesia, the candidate nominated by ASEAN, received the highest number of votes with 186 votes.
The 15 newly elected countries will begin their Human Rights Council terms on January 1, 2024, joining the incumbent members: Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Benin, Cameroon, Chile, Costa Rica, Eritrea, Finland, Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Maldives, Montenegro, Morocco, Paraguay, Qatar, Romania, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States, and Vietnam.
Thus, in 2024, two ASEAN countries will be members of the Human Rights Council: Vietnam and Indonesia.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, extended congratulations to the new members of the Human Rights Council and expressed Vietnam's desire, as the current member state, to strengthen cooperation and work with the new members to further enhance the role of this body in protecting and promoting human rights in the future.
