Ensuring stable and safe electricity supply for the North during the hot season of 2025

In the summer of 2025, the weather in the North is forecast to have severe and prolonged heat waves, causing the demand for electricity consumption to continue to increase sharply. The Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) has been implementing many measures to proactively ensure a stable and safe electricity supply during the hot season of 2025.

According to EVNNPC, in recent years, peak electricity consumption during the summer months can increase by 10-15% compared to the annual average. In 2024 alone, the peak power capacity of the Northern power system at times exceeded 24,500 MW – a record high.

The simultaneous increase in residential, industrial, and service loads poses a significant challenge to ensuring stable power system operation. Furthermore, due to the influence of El Nino and dependence on hydrological conditions, the ability to mobilize additional power sources remains difficult. Therefore, EVNNPC has proactively implemented synchronized solutions to optimize power system operation during peak seasons.

Enhancing solutions for power system operation.

From the beginning of 2025, EVNNPC has requested its affiliated power companies to develop flexible operating plans and regularly update load conditions to promptly adjust power supply plans accordingly. At the same time, the units have also been instructed to prepare emergency response scenarios to minimize power supply disruptions during the peak summer season.

EVNNPC implements plans to ensure stable and safe electricity supply during the 2025 hot season.

In addition, EVNNPC also closely coordinates with the National Power System Operation and Electricity Market Company Limited (NSMO) to optimize operating methods, rationally mobilize power sources, and ensure the safe and stable operation of the system.

EVNNPC has issued document No. 239/EVNNPC-KT+KD on electricity supply solutions and document No. 725/EVNNPC-KT on the dry season power grid repair plan. Accordingly, power companies must complete repairs to the 110kV power grid before March 31, 2025, to avoid affecting power generation during the peak dry season.

Accelerate investment and upgrade of the power grid.

To meet the ever-increasing load demand, EVNNPC is accelerating investment in the renovation and upgrading of the power grid system. Key projects on the 110kV and 220kV grids are being urgently implemented, especially in areas with high load growth such as key industrial zones.

The corporation is also focusing on completing several important projects, including upgrading the transformer capacity at the 110kV Thuan Chau substation (Son La) and the 110kV Quang Uyen substation (Cao Bang); the 220kV Phu Binh 2 substation project, the 220kV Phu Binh 2 branch line connecting Thai Nguyen and Bac Giang , and four 110kV outgoing lines after the substation in Thai Nguyen province... Investment in automation systems and the application of SCADA/DMS technology for remote monitoring and control are also being strengthened to improve the reliability of the power grid.

As of the end of February 2025, EVNNPC had put into operation 6 projects according to the plan of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), achieving 5.3% of the annual plan, creating an important foundation for ensuring stable electricity supply in the upcoming peak months.

Actively implement electricity saving measures and load adjustment.

To reduce pressure on the power system, EVNNPC continues to implement demand response (DR) programs, encouraging businesses to shift production times to off-peak hours to alleviate the load on the power grid.

In addition, a widespread electricity saving program has been launched, targeting the business community and the public with specific recommendations such as adjusting production plans, limiting machinery operation during peak hours; using air conditioners rationally, setting the temperature to 26-27°C in combination with fans; and turning off unnecessary electrical devices.

EVNNPC also implemented a communication campaign on electricity saving in 27 provinces/cities in the North to raise public awareness. Thanks to these synchronized solutions, in just the first two months of 2025, EVNNPC saved 304.71 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to 2.36% of commercial electricity production, making a significant contribution to reducing the load on the Northern power grid amidst high demand.

From March 26th to April 11th, EVNNPC directed its power companies to organize the 2025 Customer Conference to summarize electricity supply work in 2024, update the electricity supply situation in 2025, and introduce electricity services. The conference promoted the development of self-sufficient rooftop solar power and customer support programs for energy saving. The event was an opportunity to express gratitude to and honor outstanding customers who have partnered with the electricity sector, affirming EVNNPC's commitment to providing stable electricity, improving service quality, and striving for sustainable development.

Ensuring power grid safety and preventing incidents.

Alongside its mission to ensure electricity supply, EVNNPC is also strengthening its efforts to inspect and address safety risks on the power grid, especially in densely populated areas and industrial zones.

EVNNPC distributes leaflets and provides direct advice to people on safe, economical, and efficient electricity use.

The corporation has intensified regular inspections and maintenance of the power system to prevent the risk of overload and short circuits due to rising temperatures. Close coordination with local authorities is being carried out to disseminate information on electrical safety and guide people on proper electricity usage to avoid incidents. Inspections of power grid corridors and timely handling of potentially unsafe locations are also being implemented rigorously to ensure stable system operation during the summer.

Efforts to ensure stable electricity supply during the 2025 peak season.

As a power distribution unit, EVNNPC strengthens coordination with the National Power System Dispatching Unit to closely monitor load conditions and assess the capacity for power balancing under each operating mode. At the same time, the Corporation proactively updates and promptly informs customers, the Department of Industry and Trade, and the People's Committees of provinces and cities about the power supply situation, helping localities to make appropriate adjustments.

EVNNPC affirms its commitment to providing sufficient electricity under normal conditions. However, during peak hours on intensely hot days – when the load surges – the Corporation calls on businesses and electricity consumers to work together to implement electricity saving solutions and use electricity efficiently. This is a key factor in reducing pressure on the power system, contributing to ensuring energy security and aiming for sustainable development.
