Propose that the US open its market further for Vietnamese goods

According to the special correspondent of VNA, on the occasion of attending the High-level Week of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, on the afternoon of September 19 in Washington (USA), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received US Trade Representative Katherine Tai.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the success of President Joe Biden's state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Trade Representative Katherine Tai expressed their pleasure to meet again after Ms. Tai's visit to Vietnam in February 2023.

The Prime Minister and the US Trade Representative both agreed that the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership framework between the two countries opens a new phase for extensive cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of economics, trade and investment.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh thanked the US Trade Representative for his contributions to the development of bilateral relations. He suggested that both sides actively coordinate to quickly realize the agreements reached by the two countries' senior leaders, including the US prioritizing the acceleration of the roadmap for recognizing Vietnam's market economy status, further opening the market for Vietnamese goods such as textiles, footwear, and agricultural products, while at the same time properly considering the interests of Vietnamese enterprises and not applying trade defense measures against Vietnamese goods on the basis of ensuring balance, equality, and mutual benefit.

The Prime Minister suggested that the two sides create breakthroughs in cooperation in science and technology, innovation, education and training; and asked the US to support Vietnam in building a supply chain related to semiconductor chips.

The US Trade Representative affirmed the significance and importance of the two countries establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership framework, considering this an opportunity for both sides to cooperate to promote economic and trade relations.

Ms. Katherine Tai recalled her deep impressions when visiting Vietnam and the visit helped her understand more about Vietnam. She affirmed that the United States always considers Vietnam an important partner in the region; wishes to continue promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation and the Office of the United States Trade Representative will play a role in continuing to promote the relationship between the two countries in the coming time.

Ms. Katherine Tai informed about the progress and expressed her hope that Vietnam would continue to participate in supporting efforts to soon conclude discussions on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) to bring common benefits to countries and people in the region.
