Many changes to the exam
2025 is the first year that the high school graduation exam is organized according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program, the number of subjects and the format of the exam structure have changed significantly towards assessing capacity. Therefore, the preparation work was deployed early, remotely, tested and trained thoroughly. The Ministry will continue to promote the application of information technology to achieve greater efficiency in many stages of the exam.
According to the announced plan, from 2025, each candidate taking the high school graduation exam must take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects (math, literature) and 2 elective subjects (from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12: foreign language, history, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economic and legal education, information technology and technology). The literature subject will be tested in essay form with a time limit of 120 minutes; the test has 2 parts: reading comprehension (4 points) and writing (6 points). The remaining subjects will be tested in multiple choice form, in which the math subject has a time limit of 90 minutes, the remaining subjects have a time limit of 50 minutes.
In addition to changing the number of subjects, the high school graduation exam from 2025 will have changes in the exam questions. According to the announced exam format structure, the multiple-choice exams will have some changes such as: in addition to the multiple-choice question format with 4 answers, the exam will add 2 new multiple-choice answer formats (true/false multiple-choice format; short-answer multiple-choice format); along with that, the scoring method will have some changes (in the new multiple-choice question format).
Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Training said that these changes help classify students better; contribute to more accurate assessment of candidates' abilities and differentiate exam scores.
B ensures inheritance
The Ministry of Education and Training said that the high school graduation exam from 2025 will be designed to assess capacity, closely following the program; the literature exam will avoid using materials in textbooks. This is to overcome the situation of guessing questions, learning by heart, and memorizing mechanically. The exam closely follows the 2018 General Education Program, is classified by levels, and meets the exam requirements with many goals; requires students to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned to real life, in the provided context.
To suit the program and students' level, the high school graduation exam from 2025 is designed to assess capacity, ensuring inheritance from the 2006 General Education Program. The exam structure has the same types of questions and number of questions as in previous years.
In order to facilitate students and teachers in teaching, learning and reviewing for the High School Graduation Exam from 2025, the Ministry of Education and Training has implemented many synchronous solutions. Accordingly, the structure and format of the exam questions were announced by the Ministry of Education and Training from March 2024, helping students and teachers have the whole school year to review and approach the new exam structure and format.
The Ministry of Education and Training also organized many training sessions for teachers nationwide on how to create exam questions according to the new exam format structure, helping teachers and Departments of Education and Training improve their exam creation capacity.
The Ministry has many documents guiding and orienting changes in exam questions and exams so that candidates and schools can be proactive in teaching, learning and reviewing.
On the eve of the 2024-2025 school year, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued a document guiding the organization of teaching and learning at all levels. For secondary schools, the Ministry noted that when creating test questions, it is necessary to closely follow the structure and format to evaluate students. The teaching and testing process and test design must comply with and follow the correct procedures, from determining the correct purpose of the questions to choosing the appropriate context for students to apply the knowledge they have learned when dealing with practical situations in life. The Ministry emphasized that it will soon announce sample test questions so that localities, teachers and students can prepare well for the exam review.
The Ministry of Education and Training is drafting the Regulations on High School Graduation Exams from 2025 to solicit public opinion. According to the plan, the 2025 High School Graduation Exam will take place on June 26-27 with 2 sets of exam questions, including 1 set of exam questions for candidates studying under the 2018 General Education Program and 1 set of exam questions for candidates studying under the 2006 General Education Program. The Regulations on High School Graduation Exams from 2025 are expected to be issued in November 2024.
