According to the plan, by 2026, the southern region will have more than 900km of expressways completed and put into operation.
The Ministry of Transport has recently issued a document responding to voters in An Giang province regarding investment in transport infrastructure in the southern region.
In recent years, significant resources have been allocated to invest in the expressway system in the southern region, increasing connectivity capacity (In the photo: Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway).
According to the Ministry of Transport, in recent years, thanks to the attention of the Party, the National Assembly , the Government, and the Prime Minister, the expressway system in the southern region has made strong progress.
Before entering the 2021-2025 term, the entire region had only 91km of highways.
To date, the Trung Luong - My Thuan, My Thuan - Can Tho , My Thuan 2 Bridge, and Phan Thiet - Dau Giay expressways have been put into operation, increasing the total length of expressways in the region to 223km (an increase of 132km).
The expressways currently under construction include: Ring Road 3 - Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Luc - Long Thanh, Bien Hoa - Vung Tau, An Huu - Cao Lanh, Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang, Can Tho - Ca Mau, Cao Lanh - Lo Te, Lo Te - Rach Soi. The total length is 712km.
"It is projected that by 2026, the total length of the expressway system in the southern region will reach 935 km," the Ministry of Transport informed.
According to the Ministry of Transport, in order to strengthen regional connectivity and create momentum for socio-economic development in the region, many expressways have been and are being studied for investment, with completion expected in the period 2026 - 2030.
Several routes have been approved for investment and allocated sufficient state budget funds for implementation by competent authorities, such as: Gia Nghia - Chon Thanh, Dau Giay - Tan Phu - Bao Loc - Lien Khuong, Ho Chi Minh City - Chon Thanh, Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai, and My An - Cao Lanh.
Some routes have been assigned by the Prime Minister to local authorities for investment research, such as: Ho Chi Minh City's Ring Road 4, and the Go Dau - Xa Mat route.
"By 2030, the highway system in the southern region will be basically invested in according to the plan, effectively meeting the medium and long-term transportation needs of the region," the Ministry of Transport affirmed.
