High scores but still fail, do candidates still have a chance to enter a "hot" industry?

9.5 points still failed university

This year, the admission scores for many universities based on high school graduation exam scores are very high. It is noted that in many majors, candidates who scored 9.5 points per subject were not admitted.

Examples include the Faculty of Literature and History Education of Hanoi National University of Education. These two faculties of the school lead the faculties with the highest admission scores in 2024 with a benchmark score of 29.3. With this score, candidates must achieve more than 9.7 points/subject to be admitted.

Next is the Chinese Studies major of the Diplomatic Academy with a benchmark score of 29.2 points; the Public Relations major of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi has a benchmark score of 29.1 points.

This year, the benchmark score for Journalism continues to be among the top majors with extremely high benchmark scores. For example, the benchmark score for Journalism at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University, Hanoi is 29.03 points; the benchmark score for Journalism at the Hanoi University of Culture is 28.9 points.

Thus, with this score, many candidates, even though they get 9.5 points/subject, still do not pass the exam.

Representatives of many schools said that this year's admission score increased due to the large number of candidates, along with better graduation exam scores than last year.

Explaining the reason for the high benchmark scores of many majors and schools, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son said that information about majors and schools is increasingly transparent and clear. Therefore, schools with good training quality and high human resource demand will attract many candidates.

Regarding the high benchmark scores for block C00, candidates achieved 9.5 points/subject but were not admitted to many majors, Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son said that the Ministry of Education and Training had also made assessments and predictions from the beginning when comparing the score distribution of the past 2 years and saw an increase. With prestigious and quality schools, the competition is even more evident.

According to Mr. Son, the increase in admission scores to Pedagogical schools is a positive sign showing that the social demand for teachers and general education teachers is very clear, especially in some subjects such as History and Geography.

Note on additional admissions

While many candidates failed all their wishes despite getting 9.5 points/subject, many universities have announced additional admissions in 2024.

Regarding this issue, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) said that the management agency has issued full documents and guidance documents on enrollment, at the same time built a system and provided information to support candidates in career orientation and enrollment registration.

Every year, the entire system has coordinated and accompanied to advise and support candidates in registering for admission. However, according to Ms. Thuy, with nearly 1 million candidates, it is inevitable that some students with high scores still fail the university entrance exam because they set their wishes in majors with too high admission scores.

Regarding additional admissions, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy informed that from August 28 to December 2024, candidates who need to apply for additional admissions of training institutions need to find information at the school to find the most suitable choice for themselves.

Ms. Thuy noted that candidates need to follow the enrollment plan posted on the enrollment information page of the training institution (if the training institution conducts additional enrollment), and submit their application directly to that training institution.

According to the plan instructed by the Ministry of Education and Training, from August 19 to 5:00 p.m. on August 27, all admitted candidates must complete the first round of online admission confirmation on the Ministry's Admissions System.

Candidates should note to complete all steps in the online admission confirmation process until the system records that they have successfully confirmed their admission. Candidates who do not confirm their admission within the specified time will be considered as refusing admission.
