Some schools such as Vinh Long University of Technical Education, Vietnam University of Petroleum (Ba Ria - Vung Tau), Dong Nai University of Technology, University of Finance - Accounting (Quang Ngai) ... have many majors that, although the minimum admission score is 15, include regional and subject priority points according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , so with an exam score of less than 5 points per subject, candidates are still eligible to apply.

In fact, this floor score does not shock many people, because many universities have previously announced the 2024 high school transcript benchmark score of only 15 points/combination. For example, Hoa Binh University takes the benchmark score for considering transcripts from 15 - 17 points for all majors, except for the Health sector. The benchmark score for the Information Technology major based on the 2024 high school transcript benchmark of Quang Binh University is only 16 points.

Gia Dinh University has a benchmark score of 16.5 for all majors based on high school transcripts. Binh Duong University of Economics and Technology only has a benchmark score of 15 - 22 points, except for the Health sector. This benchmark score includes regional and subject priority points, if any. Candidates with priority points and transcript scores lower than 5 points/subject can also be admitted to university.

Looking back, in 2023, a series of universities announced admission scores based on the 2023 high school graduation exam scores at 15 points/combination for a number of majors such as University of Industrial Technology, University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Science, International Faculty (Thai Nguyen University), Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ha Long University, Dong Nai University, Vietnam Women's Academy...

Notably, the lowest benchmark score in 2023 according to the high school graduation exam score is 14 points, applied by Thanh Dong University to 19/25 majors. The English Language major of the International Academy takes 14.01 points, applied to male candidates, this is also the lowest benchmark score in 2023 among majors in the Public Security school block.

Looking at the difference between the benchmark scores of schools and majors in the same school, it shows the level of interest of candidates in training programs as well as the popularity of each major and each school. However, many experts are worried that university training has basic requirements. University students with such low input will find it difficult to meet output standards. Specifically, the level 6 framework (university level) requires individuals to have good learning ability, especially the ability to self-study and self-research, different from high school level, but with the input quality of less than 5 points/subject, whether admission is based on academic transcript scores or high school graduation exam scores, it is difficult to meet training requirements.

Currently, universities are autonomous in their admissions, and the number of admission quotas is very large, so there is a situation where students with 15 points/3 subjects pass the university entrance exam. The problem here is whether candidates choose to study that major and that school or not? Although after graduating from university and entering the labor market, society will automatically eliminate those who are not qualified, no matter how high their degrees are. However, if you wait until then, it will be too late because students have spent time and training costs to complete that degree, while university tuition is currently quite high compared to the income of many families.

Therefore, Dr. Le Viet Khuyen - former Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) said that management agencies must be responsible for setting a threshold score so that schools can select quality students, and at the same time must train quality bachelors and engineers. We cannot enroll students regardless of quality just to meet the quota. This is also the social responsibility of universities. Training costs money, and graduates are not able to practice their profession, which does not demonstrate the social responsibility of a university training institution.

From the perspective of high schools, career guidance for students also needs to be focused on so that learners have the right awareness and make choices that are suitable to their abilities and conditions and those of their families. For example, with a score of 14 - 15, students can study at a college level at a reasonable cost, with open job opportunities and many transfer opportunities for students who want to continue their studies at a higher level.
