Research robots for application, not just demo in the lab

Dr. Nguyen Trung Quan shared that VinMotion is researching and developing a robot model that can operate continuously 24/7 in a stable manner without direct human intervention.

At the seminar "Robots and intelligent automation" held on the morning of December 4, within the framework of VinFuture 2025 Science and Technology Week, Dr. Nguyen Trung Quan, University of Southern California (USA), Scientific Director of VinMotion (Vietnam) shared his thoughts on the topic.

VinMotion is a technology company under the Vingroup ecosystem, a pioneer in developing humanoid robots and Physical AI. With a team of experts from the world's leading research institutes, VinMotion aims to become one of the global pioneers in the field of humanoid robots - a technology field that is predicted to shape the future of humanity. In less than 7 months since its establishment, VinMotion has introduced 5 versions of humanoid robots.

The dream of robots moving superiorly than humans

Sharing with the press, Dr. Nguyen Trung Quan said that the VinMotion team felt very lucky and proud to have had successful robot performances at the 32nd birthday event of Vingroup Corporation and especially at the exhibition event of 80 years of national achievements on the occasion of National Day September 2. Within the framework of the A80 exhibition event alone, VinMotion performed more than 150 continuous performances to serve the people, bringing Vietnamese robots closer to the community.

After that event, the VinMotion team also continued to strongly improve its technology and products in both hardware and software. Currently, the robot moves more flexibly and much faster than 3 months ago. The AI part is also integrated with flexible multilingual communication, especially Vietnamese and English.

“We will soon announce these results as soon as possible,” said Dr. Nguyen Trung Quan.

In addition to the current robot model, VinMotion has been developing the Motion 2 robot model. This is considered a much more breakthrough robot model than the Motion 1 that was launched and demonstrated to the public recently.

The biggest difference between Motion 2 robot and other robot models is that VinMotion focuses on solving practical requirements to be able to deploy robots on a large scale in the future instead of just demoing in the lab.

Specifically, the Motion 2 robot model has been aiming for superior movement capabilities that surpass even normal people. During the design process, I also set three very important criteria, which I temporarily call the 3S standard, to ensure that the robot can operate continuously. Specifically, self-standing up, meaning that if the robot falls, it must stand up by itself; can replace the battery or charge the battery when necessary; and the hardware as well as the entire system must be in a state of continuous, stable operation without stopping for many hours.

The team's research goal for this robot model is to be able to operate continuously 24/7 in a stable manner without direct human intervention.

The golden time to realize the development of humanoid robots

Dr. Quan said that since its establishment, the company has always been determined to compete with the humanoid robot industry in the world . The VinMotion team always aspires to contribute to bringing Vietnam on par with the world's leading countries on the world technology map.

VinMotion's goal is to develop humanoid robots that are increasingly flexible, intelligent, and versatile so that they can gradually enter life in many different areas, from services, industry, to housework.

Affirming that this is a very big goal, Dr. Quan believes that this is the golden time for us to dream about it.

“With the support of Vingroup Corporation and the internal strength and desire to prove ourselves of the VinMotion engineering team, I believe that this goal is not too far away. And to achieve that, we need to try very hard, focus, and always maintain faith in the mission and path we have chosen” – Dr. Quan shared.

In the context of the world's shortage of robotics engineers, rising labor costs and the trend of shifting supply chains, if focusing on investing in the robotics or Physical AI industry, VinMotion's Chief Science Officer believes that Vietnam has many advantages.

The robotics industry specifically requires three very important things: high-tech human resources for software and AI development (1); flexible manufacturing platforms for prototyping and hardware production (2) and trust and security in application deployment.

While the US is dominant in area (1), China is dominant in area (2), if Vietnam positions itself correctly, it can emerge as a counterweight that can do well in all three areas.

With good direction and support from the Government, Vietnam can become a major competitor, even a leader in the world's robotics development.

However, the scientist also emphasized that this is a large field with a lot of potential and everything is just beginning. Vietnam's starting point is not too far from the world and we can completely believe that we can do well if we have enough faith and focus on investing in this field. This can be considered a golden opportunity for Vietnam to rise up and make its name on the world technology map.

The population is aging and the younger generation is no longer interested in many manual or boring jobs. This leads to a shortage of human resources in many different professions not only in developed countries but is also gradually happening in developing countries like Vietnam.
The emergence of humanoid robots as a craze to be ready to supplement this labor shortage is almost inevitable. In addition, in the future, if humanoid robots become more and more modern and with reasonable prices, many new industries could also be created, or thrive like never before.
