Robots will have organic neurons like humans

Scientists are researching soft materials to build robots and share the future of robots that may have artificial muscles and nerve cells like humans.

The above information was shared by experts at a discussion with the theme " Robots and Intelligent Automation " taking place on the morning of December 4 within the framework of VinFuture 2025 Science and Technology Week.

At the seminar, experts said that humanoid robots are entering a period of strong acceleration, bringing with it a series of economic and scientific opportunities, while also posing many problems regarding safety, ethics and social acceptance.

Sharing about the future of materials, switching from hard materials to soft materials in robot manufacturing, Professor Ho Young Kim - Seoul National University (Korea), commented that this material needs to ensure fire resistance and use less polymer materials.

" Scientists are researching soft materials or finding new materials to replace hard materials in making robots to minimize the risk of impact on humans ," said Professor Ho Young Kim.

In response to the question about the future of creating artificial muscles for robots, Professor Kurt Kremer - Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Germany) - said that the world is currently conducting some research on this content to both obtain soft materials and pump energy into soft muscles, thereby training and coaching robots.

" However, to create robots with neurons like humans, many research steps are needed ," Professor Kurt Kremer expressed.

Faced with the issue of robots with human-like capabilities in the future, Dr. Nguyen Trung Quan - Assistant Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC) and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of VinMotion, stated that three factors need to be considered: Good hardware, good software/AI, and a safe deployment system.

According to Mr. Quan, to create a humanoid robot requires many solutions. Using robots to imitate human activities, we need to think about what is a good solution. Taking advantage of data from humans or images from the Internet to train robots is an option that can be considered, although it is not the optimal solution. Compared to other countries, Vietnam is rare in doing all three aspects at the same time.

" Regarding physical safety, in the future, if we want robots to operate like humans, we must pay attention to safety issues from AI design so that robots can move and interact ," Dr. Quan shared.

Meanwhile, Professor Tan Yap Peng, Principal of VinUni, said that with the Chat GPT application, robots can accompany humans, giving advice and consultation to humans.

Yet even as materials and hardware advance, AI that controls behavior so robots “behave like humans” is still far from the natural capabilities of humans.
