Stemming from the practical needs of communities, the "Intergenerational Self-Help Club" model in the province has proven remarkably effective in promoting the role of the elderly. This model not only helps improve the quality of life for the elderly but also plays a significant role in building a united community and developing cultural life in local areas.
In Huu Do 1 area, Hop Nhat commune, Doan Hung district, 2024 marks the third year of operation for the "Intergenerational Self-Help Club". This is one of the outstanding models of activity in the locality, implemented from the practical needs of disadvantaged families, especially those with elderly people who are sick or living alone.
Ms. Ngo Thi Lien, a member of the club, shared about the difficulties her family faced before joining: "My husband has a serious illness, and I have a bone and joint disease that prevents me from doing heavy work, while my children work far away. After joining the club, thanks to the encouragement and regular visits from the members, my family has overcome difficulties and achieved a stable life."
Members of the "Intergenerational Self-Help" Club are assisting other club members after the storm.
Ms. Lien also added that, thanks to the connections made by the club, she not only received material assistance but also emotional support, which she considers invaluable during this difficult period for her family.
Mr. Nguyen Tat Ky, Chairman of the "Intergenerational Self-Help" Club in Huu Do 1 area, Hop Nhat commune, said: "We regularly organize home-based counseling sessions, monitor the situation of club members, and assist families when they face difficulties. The club's success in this work is mainly due to the affection, solidarity, and mutual support spirit of its members."
Doan Hung District currently has 4 "Intergenerational Self-Help" Clubs implemented in the communes of Hop Nhat, Tay Coc, and Chan Mong. A prominent feature of these clubs is that members consistently emphasize the role of self-help activities, supporting the community and assisting people in various ways, such as helping poor households, assisting members with harvesting crops when they are sick or in distress, and coordinating with local Party committees and authorities to collect waste and clean up the environment. These activities not only strengthen member bonds but are also recognized and highly appreciated by relevant authorities and agencies.
Members of the "Intergenerational Self-Help" Club participated in a learning and experience-sharing session.
Through healthcare, economic , and spiritual support activities, these clubs have created a space for intergenerational connection, helping the elderly not only live happily and healthily but also actively participate in preserving and promoting local traditional values.
In Zone 4, Thanh Dinh Commune, Viet Tri City, the "Intergenerational Self-Help Club" is entering its 6th year of operation and has currently attracted 60 members, including 48 elderly people. The remaining members are young people, women, and local residents. This model not only helps the elderly overcome difficulties in life but also promotes economic development, supports households in starting businesses, and improves income.
One of the club's outstanding programs is its preferential loan fund for members. To date, the club has disbursed 400 million VND to 7 households at an interest rate of 0.8% per month. Members mainly use these loans to invest in economic activities such as livestock farming, expanding workshops, and developing services. Thanks to these loans, many families have improved their living standards, helping members become financially independent and better off in life.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Chairman of the "Intergenerational Self-Help" Club in Zone 4, Thanh Dinh Commune, said: "The preferential loan model not only helps families overcome difficulties but also creates a ripple effect in the community, giving members more motivation and confidence to develop their economy. Members who borrow capital are able to make good use of the funds and improve their family lives."
Beyond providing material assistance, the club also creates an environment for interaction and sharing between generations. The elderly are not only recipients of support but also pass on valuable experiences in agricultural production, animal husbandry, and life skills to the younger generation. This not only helps preserve traditional values but also fosters a generation that is responsible to the community.

The positive results from the activities of "Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs" have demonstrated the effectiveness of this model in caring for and promoting the role of the elderly, especially in the context of an increasingly aging population. Through activities such as assisting with crop harvesting, healthcare, and providing loans for economic development, the clubs have helped the elderly overcome difficulties, live happily and healthily, and contribute to the community. In particular, the "Intergenerational Self-Help Club" model has helped connect generations, creating opportunities for cooperation and sustainable development.
The intergenerational self-help club model in the province not only benefits its members but also contributes positively to the overall development of the community. This is an innovative and humane model, worthy of being replicated and developed in many other localities so that the elderly can not only live healthy lives but also contribute positively to society.
