By the end of 2023, the area planted with dragon fruit in China reached 67,000 hectares, with a production of 1.6 million tons, surpassing Vietnam (55,000 hectares, production over 1.2 million tons).
Previously, Vietnam led the world in terms of area, production, and export of dragon fruit. Dragon fruit has always been a "billion-dollar" agricultural product of Vietnam. Binh Thuan, the "dragon fruit capital," accounts for half of the country's dragon fruit area and production.
However, China's dragon fruit acreage and production have increased rapidly, surpassing Vietnam, causing Vietnamese dragon fruit to gradually lose its advantage in the Chinese market.
To avoid a situation of "supply exceeding demand," the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development advocates against increasing the area planted with dragon fruit, especially in areas lacking suitable land and irrigation conditions, areas unsuitable for intensive cultivation, and areas affected by flooding and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta.
According to the plan, by 2025, the area of dragon fruit cultivation nationwide will not exceed 60,000 hectares, and by 2030, it will not exceed 65,000 hectares, with production maintained at 1.3-1.5 million tons.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is orienting the development of the dragon fruit industry in three key provinces: Binh Thuan, Long An, and Tien Giang , prioritizing the improvement of quality and competitiveness of Vietnamese dragon fruit products.
