Solo travel isn't a new phenomenon, as this travel trend is gaining popularity among young people following the backpacking trend... But not everyone has the experience to handle unexpected situations.
The post "Skills for Traveling Alone" in the "Travel Enthusiasts" group on social media attracted over 3,000 likes and comments from young people. Many agreed, expressing that traveling alone is a way to overcome personal limitations such as shyness in interacting with strangers, experiencing new routes, improving language skills, and managing finances while traveling. However, there were also quite a few opposing opinions such as: How would you handle getting lost, getting motion sickness, or losing your luggage?; If your foreign language communication skills aren't good, who can you ask for help in a situation where you're traveling alone abroad and lose your luggage/personal documents?; What if you choose a trip that includes mountain climbing/hiking but you're not healthy enough or get sick during the trip?...
Having traveled solo twice before, this summer Tran Thi Hong Anh (26 years old, residing in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) decided to go with a group of friends. “Traveling solo allows you to freely decide where to stay, where to eat… but in return, you need good health and navigation skills like using GPS on your phone. My two solo travel experiences were fun, but a bit tiring because I get motion sickness, and I didn't have friends or family to support me,” Hong Anh shared.
Taking a bold step, Huynh Thai An (30 years old, residing in Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City) planned a solo trip to Thailand with only money in his account and limited foreign language skills. Thai An recounted: “On the first day, after arriving and checking into the hotel, I started to feel bored because I couldn't communicate much or discover many interesting things. On the second day, I posted in a social media group for Vietnamese people in Thailand, and luckily connected with a friend studying cosmetology there. She spoke Thai and English very well, took me to many places, and introduced me to the culture of each location. After the trip, I learned that traveling abroad alone requires foreign language skills; otherwise, just book a tour, because it's very boring.”
Traveling solo is also essential when you need a quiet break and a chance to challenge yourself. But to make this decision, young people need skills and courage rather than recklessness.
