On February 14th, the Ophthalmology Department (Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital, Dong Hoi, Quang Binh ) announced that it had successfully collaborated with the Biochemistry - Hematology - Blood Transfusion Department to perform the first eye surgery using fibrin biological adhesive, which was researched and produced by the hospital itself.
This success makes the hospital the fourth institution in the country to independently produce and apply fibrin adhesive in eye surgery, opening a new chapter in ophthalmological treatment.
The surgery took place that morning. The first patient at this hospital to undergo the new surgical method was Mr. Nguyen Thanh N. (52 years old, Dong Hoi).
Mr. N. had suffered from pterygium for many years and had previously undergone surgery using sutures. After having his other eye surgically repaired with fibrin bio-adhesive, he no longer experienced the pain and discomfort he had before.
According to Dr. Tran Anh Duong, head of the ophthalmology department at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi, pterygium is a common eye condition, often seen in people who work outdoors in windy, dusty, and sunny conditions.
Previously, the primary treatment method was surgical removal of the pterygium and autologous conjunctival grafting, using sutures to fix the graft. However, this method has the disadvantage of causing a gritty, irritating sensation in the eye and carrying the risk of infection and slow recovery.
Recently, doctors at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi successfully researched and produced fibrin bio-adhesive. Notably, this adhesive is made from the patient's own blood, ensuring high safety and preventing rejection or allergic reactions.
Fibrin glue naturally fixes the graft in place without the need for sutures, helping to reduce pain, limit complications, and shorten recovery time.
The self-production and application of fibrin adhesive marks a significant step forward in the treatment of eye diseases at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi.
"With this success, the hospital has become the fourth unit in the country to produce its own fibrin adhesive. We will continue to research and improve this technology for wider application in other eye surgeries, not just limited to pterygium and conjunctival grafting," said Dr. Duong.
