Strict control from seaports to lagoons

According to the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, the Provincial People's Committee has directed functional forces and localities to strengthen coordination in fleet management, strictly control port entry and exit activities, and strictly implement the confirmation, certification and traceability of exploited aquatic products. In the past week, no fishing vessels in the province lost the signal connecting to the journey monitoring device or crossed the permitted sea boundary.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, as of October 15, the whole province had 5,777 fishing vessels of 6 meters or longer that had been registered and updated to the VNFishbase system. At the three fishing ports of Quy Nhon, De Gi and Tam Quan, the control of import and export vessels was strictly implemented; from the beginning of 2025 to now, there have been 21,011 vessels arriving at the port, with the unloading output reaching 35,450 tons of aquatic products.

Along with maintaining control at ports, coastal localities have also implemented many solutions to deal with overexploitation at sea and in lagoon areas. In De Gi commune, recently, a number of boats have been using electric shocks and mechanical shocks to exploit seafood, causing serious damage to resources and the ecological environment.

Faced with this situation, the local government has taken drastic action. Since September, the commune has established an inter-sectoral working group to combat IUU fishing, coordinated with the border guards and the fisheries sector to conduct regular patrols, invited ship owners at risk of violating to work, and required a commitment not to use prohibited fishing gear. Nearly 50 ships that had violated have had their electric shock and engine equipment dismantled and destroyed; more than 500 fishing vessels have been inspected and guided to complete registration and inspection according to regulations.

Thanks to the synchronous coordination from the province to the grassroots, the illegal exploitation situation in De Gi lagoon has been basically handled, contributing to the protection of aquatic resources and moving towards the goal of responsible and sustainable fisheries development.

Advance payment of more than 4.4 billion VND to support fishing boat owners who are not qualified to exploit aquatic resources

Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Duong Mah Tiep has just signed a decision to advance more than 4.4 billion VND to support stabilizing the lives of fishing boat owners who are not qualified to continue fishing in the area.

The funding will be allocated to the wards: Quy Nhon, Quy Nhon Dong, Quy Nhon Nam, Hoai Nhon, Hoai Nhon Dong, Hoai Nhon Bac and the communes: Nhon Chau, Tuy Phuoc Dong, Cat Tien, De Gi, An Luong, Phu My Dong.

According to regulations, the support is only applicable to fishing vessels that do not meet the requirements for registration, inspection, fishing license or are operating in the wrong profession. The vessel owner must commit to comply with the law, especially against IUU fishing, and not take the vessel to sea during the support period.

The beneficiaries are fishing boat owners and members of the same permanent household in Gia Lai, confirmed by the local authorities that their boats are not qualified for fishing. The level of support in cash is equivalent to 30 kg of rice/person/month (calculated according to the average rice price: 14,719 VND/kg in the ward and 14,188 VND/kg in the commune). In addition, each household will receive an additional 3 million VND/month. The support period is 2 months (September and October 2025).
