Recently, many parents in An Khe town, Gia Lai province reported having to pay many extra fees when their children entered the new school year.
Reflecting to a reporter of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. H - a parent whose child is studying at Trung Vuong Secondary School (An Tan Ward, An Khe Town) said that this school year his child had to pay many unreasonable and illegal fees such as: 100,000 VND for ornamental plants, 50,000 VND for labor, 60,000 VND for photocopying, rewards...
"Last school year, the school asked us to pay 100,000 VND/student to buy a TV, but this year, instead of asking us to pay for a TV, they asked us to pay 100,000 VND to buy ornamental plants. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, most of the students are studying online, but the school still collects 60,000 VND for photocopying," Mr. H. said indignantly.

Trung Vuong Secondary School received backlash from parents for charging 100,000 VND per student to buy ornamental plants.
According to Mr. H., in addition to collecting fees outside of regulations, the school did not publicly and transparently spend the fees collected from the previous school year. In addition, many parents did not agree but were still forced to pay.
Similarly, Ngo May Primary School (Group 8, An Phu Ward, An Khe Town) was also reported by parents for collecting many fees outside of regulations, such as being a public school, being funded but still collecting 50,000 VND for facilities, 90,000 VND for sanitation...
According to Ms. Huynh Thi Huong, Principal of Ngo May Primary School, the school has 1,600 students at 2 campuses. At the beginning of the school year, the above fees were drafted to mobilize parents to contribute. This draft has not yet been submitted to the Department of Education and Training of An Khe town.
Ms. Huong also explained that many of the expenses that parents have reported, such as the facility fee, are due to insufficient funding, so additional funds must be mobilized. In addition, many other expenses, such as the cleaning fee, are to hire two cleaners in the school with actual salaries (1 person 6.9 million VND/month at facility 1, and 1 person 7.3 million VND/month at facility 2). All revenues and expenditures are public and transparent.
To clarify the information about the affiliated schools collecting many fees outside of the regulations, we contacted Ms. Le Thi Kieu Hanh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of An Khe town. However, Ms. Hanh refused to work because she said she did not have the right to speak to the press.
