Global pepper prices remain under pressure from low demand and the appreciation of the US dollar. Vietnam’s pepper exports have been falling continuously in recent months.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnam exported about 220,300 tons of pepper with an estimated value of 1.12 billion USD. This figure marks the milestone of surpassing 1 billion USD after many years of waiting. Although the volume of pepper exported decreased by 2.3% compared to the same period last year, the value increased sharply by 48.2%.
The average pepper export price in the first 10 months of 2024 reached about 5,084 USD/ton, an increase of 51.7% over the same period in 2023.
Mr. Phan Minh Thong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phuc Sinh Joint Stock Company, said that the Vietnamese pepper industry is benefiting from high export prices due to limited supply.
According to him, farmers this year benefited from high pepper prices, but export businesses had difficulty purchasing domestically. To meet demand, Phuc Sinh imported a lot of pepper from Brazil and Indonesia.
The reason is that due to low production, farmers are holding on to their goods for speculation. Prolonged drought also makes domestic supply more scarce.
Experts predict that Vietnam is about to enter a new harvest season, with an expected output of about 170,000 tons, accounting for 35-40% of global supply. This could cause world pepper prices to fluctuate in the coming time. Currently, supply is lower than demand, helping pepper prices remain high.
In particular, the current pepper price is still high compared to previous years, helping many farmers earn good profits. However, the price may fluctuate in the short term because it is affected by many factors.
In the short term, the pepper market is likely to continue to fluctuate. Pepper prices are expected to remain stable or decrease slightly due to limited supply and a lack of strong recovery in demand.
