Challenges in export markets
While domestic prices are stable, durian exports to China – the largest market – are facing difficulties. Many shipments have been warned of cadmium residue exceeding the allowable limit. Cadmium is a heavy metal that can accumulate in soil, especially in acid sulfate soils when phosphate fertilizers are used excessively, increasing the risk of affecting fruit quality.
Experts say that to maintain market share, the durian industry needs to restructure towards sustainable production. This includes surveying and controlling cadmium content in soil and crops, applying safe farming processes, standardizing growing areas and enhancing traceability. In addition, diversifying export markets will help reduce dependence on China and improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese durian.
