Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery rose 2 yuan to 3,385 yuan a tonne.

Iron ore futures fell and were set for a monthly loss, pressured by concerns about US tariffs and rising trade tensions over Chinese steel exports.

The most-traded iron ore contract for May delivery on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.74 percent to 799.5 yuan ($109.72) a tonne.

The contract lost 1.17% for the month. The benchmark iron ore for March delivery on the Singapore Exchange fell 1.36% to $103.65 a tonne, down 1.94% in February.

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that his proposed 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada will take effect on March 4 along with an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports.

US President Donald Trump imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese imports earlier this month, resulting in a cumulative tariff of 20%.

Mr. Trump also announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminum, which has caused a new wave of trade tensions over Chinese steel.

Vietnam has announced temporary anti-dumping duties on some Chinese steel products, while South Korea has imposed temporary duties on imported Chinese steel.

US steel tariffs would also disrupt an estimated $7 billion worth of Chinese steel transshipment, undermining a key source of sales for China's struggling steel industry.

Meanwhile, shortcomings in China’s barter program, which can lower the cost of unsubsidized goods and reduce future spending, are putting pressure on authorities to announce consumer-focused policies with longer-term impact when China’s National People’s Congress begins its annual meeting on March 5.

Furthermore, factory activity in China likely contracted for a second month in February, continuing calls for further stimulus measures to support weakening domestic demand.

However, benchmark steel prices on the Shanghai Futures Exchange still rose. Rebar rose nearly 0.1%, hot-rolled coil rose 0.18%, wire rod rose 0.14% and stainless steel rose 0.3%.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE all rose, with coking coal up 0.41% and 0.78% respectively.
