Alternative solutions to sand loading for roadbeds on the Western Vietnam cross-section expressway.

Progress is increasing day by day.

Since the first sand mines were handed over by An Giang province under a special mechanism to serve the construction of the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway, the construction site has become bustling and the project's progress has increased day by day.

Since the availability of sand, the construction progress of the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway, the section passing through An Giang province, has been increasing day by day.

Regarding package number 44, Mr. Vo Dai Thach, the project commander of Thanh Huy Group Joint Stock Company (the construction contractor), stated that the section of the Western Vietnam horizontal expressway being constructed by the contractor is 5.7km long.

Since the sand was delivered to the construction site on April 15th, the contractor's work has progressed smoothly, and the project's progress has increased daily, reaching over 50% of the assigned work volume to date.

On the construction site, the contractor has deployed 10 construction teams, including 4 teams for road construction, 4 teams for bridge construction, and 2 teams for drainage culvert construction. Currently, workers are mainly focused on constructing the superstructure and installing bridge railings.

The contractor is working diligently to meet the deadline for completing the roadbed load testing by the end of the year.

In addition, workers have been organized to construct the roadbed, implement elevation checks for drainage wicks, and install soil-cement piles for 5km. Notably, to date, the contractor has completed 1.5km of sand embankment for roadbed reinforcement.

“Currently, the average amount of sand delivered to the construction site is 2,500 cubic meters per day, ensuring that the contractor will complete the soil stabilization work by December 31st. In addition, the contractor plans to complete the entire bridge section this year,” Mr. Thach added.

Efforts to complete roadbed loading

For projects where sufficient sand is supplied on the same day, construction proceeds smoothly. However, for locations requiring a larger quantity of sand, contractors have devised solutions to overcome difficulties and meet the assigned deadlines.

Major Nguyen Dinh Du, Deputy Director of the Truong Son 11 Project Management Board, Truong Son Construction Corporation (the contractor for package 42), said that according to the plan, the contractor must complete the roadbed load testing for the 13.7km stretch by the end of the year.

Contractors overcome difficulties on the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway construction site, the section passing through An Giang province.

However, the current difficulty for the contractor is that the actual sand requirement at the construction site is 10,000 m3 of sand per day, but the amount of sand delivered to the site each day is only 2,000 m3, meeting only 20% of the sand needed for construction.

Meanwhile, the average time required for roadbed loading is approximately 12 months to ensure technical requirements are met. Therefore, the contractor's solution is to use alternative materials to sand for roadbed loading, and this material will be reused for construction after the load is removed at the end of 2025.

"Due to the urgent nature of the work, the contractor proposed using crushed stone instead of sand to reinforce the roadbed. Only then can the contractor ensure the construction progress according to the plan by the end of 2024," Major Du added.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh, an official from the consulting and supervision unit for the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway section passing through An Giang province, roadbed load application means making the soil structure more compact.

Therefore, in addition to using sand, the contractor can use other substitute materials of equivalent weight to create drainage pressure and compact the roadbed. After the roadbed is compacted to the required level, the contractor removes the preload layer and begins construction.

Workers are busy on the construction site, aiming to meet the project schedule as stipulated.

"The contractor's use of crushed stone for load testing is technically sound. This approach demonstrates the contractor's flexibility and effort in meeting the project's deadlines," Mr. Dinh said.

According to the An Giang Provincial Project Management Board for Investment in Construction of Transport and Agriculture Projects (the investor), the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway section passing through the province has four bidding packages: 42, 43, 44, and 45.

To date, the project's progress has reached 32.88%. Specifically, package 42 has reached 26.04%, package 43 has reached 32.91%, package 44 has reached 47.7%, and package 45 has reached 26.17%.

Phase 1 of the Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressway project has a total length of 188.2km, passing through four provinces: An Giang, Can Tho, Hau Giang, and Soc Trang.
The route starts at National Highway 91 in Chau Doc City (An Giang province) and ends at the intersection with the Southern Hau River National Highway, connecting to the Tran De Port access road (Soc Trang province), with a total investment of 44,691 billion VND. The entire route is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2027.
Specifically, component project 1 in An Giang province is 57.2km long, component project 2 in Can Tho city is 37.2km long, component project 3 in Hau Giang province is nearly 37km long, and component project 4 in Soc Trang province is 56.9km long.
Phase 1 of the project involves the construction of a 4-lane road with a design speed of 100 km/h. The completed phase will expand the project to 6 lanes.
