Director of Nghe An Department of Education: '2.5 points to pass 10th grade is just an isolated case'

During the 31st session of the 18th term of the Nghe An Provincial People's Council, several delegates expressed concerns about the quality of education when a public school's admission score of 2.5 for 10th grade caused a stir. Many expressed worry that such low entrance scores would negatively impact the quality of education.

Specifically, Nam Dan 2 High School (Thien Nhan commune, Nghe An province) lowered its admission cutoff score from 9.5 points in the first round to 2.5 points/3 subjects, including priority points, in the second round of admissions.

Mr. Thai Van Thanh, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An Province

Mr. Thai Van Thanh, Director of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, stated that this was the fault of the Principal of Nam Dan 2 High School. In reality, only one student with 2.5 points passed the second round of exams. During the process of reporting the incident to the Department, the school principal also accepted responsibility for the matter. "This is a remote area with no private schools or continuing education centers," Mr. Thanh said.

According to the Director of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, the current enrollment process is inappropriate; between reason and emotion, reason must come first. Mr. Thanh believes that consideration should be given to guiding the child (the candidate with low exam scores) towards vocational training. Under current regulations, students who attend vocational schools still receive a high school diploma.

"In the near future, when the Vocational Education Law is amended, transforming vocational secondary schools into vocational high schools, which will teach the high school curriculum, it will create extremely favorable conditions for vocational schools and also for the process of career guidance after lower secondary education," Mr. Thanh informed.

Nam Dan 2 High School set the cutoff score for admission to 10th grade in the second round at 2.5 points for the three exam subjects.

Mr. Thanh affirmed that the aforementioned results do not reflect the overall quality of education in Nghe An province. "The viewpoint and goal of education in Nghe An is genuine, high-quality education, aiming to educate students with competence, character, and intelligence, possessing all the necessary elements, skills, abilities, and strengths... to confidently enter life, enter university, and demonstrate the character and essence of the people of Nghe An," said the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An.
