Hanoi: Following the "special task force" hunting down poisonous mosquitoes amidst the peak of dengue fever.

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - The dengue fever epidemic in Hanoi is entering its peak phase, with hundreds of new cases each week. The capital's health sector is strengthening inspections and monitoring of outbreaks, and educating people to proactively prevent the disease.

According to the Hanoi City Center for Disease Control, in the past week (from October 10th to October 17th), the entire city recorded 354 cases of dengue fever in 101 wards and communes.

Thanks to the decisive intervention of authorities, especially the health sector, the cumulative number of dengue fever cases from the beginning of the year to date has been controlled at over 3,000 cases, a decrease of 27% compared to the same period in 2024.

By 2025, Hanoi had recorded a cumulative total of 174 outbreaks, with 27 currently still active.

On the morning of October 22nd, Mobile Team No. 5 of the Hanoi CDC conducted a monitoring and investigation of the dengue fever outbreak control efforts in Bo De ward following the second round of treatment.

Previously, on October 10th, a dengue fever outbreak occurred in Residential Area No. 3, Gia Quat, with two patients. The first case was recorded on October 5th, and the second on October 8th.

Before the "deployment," the leaders of the People's Committee, the Health Station of Bo De Ward, representatives of Residential Group No. 3 Gia Quat, and Mobile Team No. 5 for epidemic prevention and control held a meeting to discuss the epidemic situation in the area and devise the most effective monitoring and investigation plan.

Alley 161 on Gia Quat Street is one of the key areas under surveillance, as it had previously recorded a case of dengue fever.

The task force directly visited houses in the alley, as well as observed high-risk areas such as stagnant water and discarded materials that could hold water, to assess the risk of dengue fever outbreaks.

Mr. NTL's house at 4/161 Gia Quat Street has four residents. According to his wife, they rarely get bitten by mosquitoes.

The team led by MSc. Vu Bien - Department of Parasitology and Entomology, CDC Hanoi, used flashlights to thoroughly inspect high-risk areas. On the rooftop, Mr. L.'s family had many plants, but no stagnant water containers with mosquito larvae were found.

In the bedrooms and prayer room, the team found mosquitoes. MSc. Bien also noted that the area where clothes are hung on the first floor poses a high risk, as the smell of human sweat can attract mosquitoes.

At the house next to Mr. L.'s, the inspection team noted a number of mosquitoes residing in the stairwell area. The family stated that they had previously sprayed mosquito repellent twice.

After carefully observing and confirming that the mosquito resting on the stairs was indeed the Aedes aegypti mosquito (also known as the striped mosquito), the main vector of dengue fever, Dr. Bien used a test tube to capture the mosquito for evaluation purposes.

Along with investigating adult mosquitoes, the team conducted an investigation into mosquito larvae by observing, collecting, recording, and classifying mosquito larvae in all water containers inside and around the house.

At a household near the end of the alley, the mobile team discovered a used ice cream container, still wet and containing numerous mosquito larvae, hidden among the plants on the rooftop.

Upon being informed of mosquito larvae in their home, the family expressed concern. They were also surprised to learn about the existence of this breeding ground for larvae. According to them, because there are young children in the house, the entire family strictly adheres to mosquito control measures as disseminated by the neighborhood and ward authorities.

According to a representative of Mobile Epidemic Prevention Team No. 5, this is not an isolated case. Although people have a very high awareness of epidemic prevention, sometimes they still lack sufficient knowledge and in-depth understanding of containers that may harbor mosquito larvae.

"For example, some families have fish tanks or rock gardens and think that with fish there won't be mosquito larvae. However, right above them, there are small stagnant water areas that create opportunities for mosquito larvae to take refuge. In reality, most of the containers holding mosquito larvae discovered during today's inspection and monitoring were discarded materials that people forgot about or didn't think of," a representative of the mobile team shared.

According to health experts, the risk of a dengue fever outbreak is usually assessed based on the presence and density of disease-transmitting mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti. Two important insect indices used are the Aedes mosquito density index and the larval index (BI).

Gia Quat Primary School currently has over 1,000 students. A school representative stated that weekly thorough cleaning and inspections of water-collecting items and aquatic plants are conducted to prevent dengue fever.

Every day, if students are absent from school, their homeroom teacher updates the information and reasons via a link so that the school administration can be informed. In the past period, the school has not recorded any cases of dengue fever among its students.

Upon inspection, the working group concluded that the school had basically implemented dengue fever prevention measures effectively. The school had proactively punctured any containers or materials that could hold water outdoors.

However, the team also discovered that the tires at the corner of the school had water pooling inside. Upon inspection, numerous Aedes mosquitoes and mosquito larvae were found there.

"These are breeding grounds for mosquito larvae that are difficult to identify. We have instructed the school to further inspect high-risk areas, such as sports cones on the sports field, and to address the problem promptly," a representative from the mobile team shared.

Upon inspection, the BI (Bio-Indicators) score for the outbreak area was 30. Meanwhile, a BI score above 20 is considered to still pose a risk of dengue fever outbreaks. Therefore, the working group recommended that the local authorities continue to take timely intervention measures to prevent and control the epidemic.

The delegation also emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns to enhance people's understanding and responsibility. The role of each individual is crucial in preventing and controlling dengue fever.

The Hanoi CDC assesses that the number of dengue fever cases is on the rise, with some outbreaks recording many patients and the situation becoming more complex.

The current weather is in a transitional period, with unpredictable rain and sunshine, and high humidity, creating favorable conditions for disease-carrying mosquitoes to breed and develop, posing a significant risk of outbreaks in the community.

Monitoring results show that insect indices in many areas remain at high-risk levels, predicting that the number of cases may continue to increase in line with the annual epidemic cycle.

For effective disease prevention, the most important measure remains eliminating mosquitoes, destroying mosquito larvae and pupae, and avoiding mosquito bites.

Therefore, every citizen needs to implement the following measures: Cover all water containers tightly to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs; sleep under mosquito nets even during the day, wear long clothing to avoid mosquito bites; use mosquito repellents such as creams, lamps, or electric rackets.

Each family should dedicate at least 10 minutes each week to inspecting and removing mosquito larvae from household water containers; cleaning and covering water tanks; and introducing fish into aquariums to kill mosquito larvae.

It is necessary to change the water in flower vases regularly, add salt or mosquito larvicide to water bowls under cupboards, fish tanks, and rock gardens; and remove waste materials that collect water, turning over unused items to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
