On August 10th, in an interview with Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Nguyen Duy Long, director of the 115 Emergency Center, stated that in less than a month, Ho Chi Minh City's pre-hospital emergency medical services had saved two newborns who were born prematurely. Notably, both babies had suffered cardiac arrest and respiratory failure shortly after birth.
The first case occurred on July 23rd in Chanh Hung ward (Ho Chi Minh City). The person who called for emergency assistance was the child's grandmother, who initially stood downstairs and was too frightened to approach her daughter and grandchild.
Immediately after being reassured and encouraged by the 115 Emergency Center coordinator, she went to check on her grandchild and found him turning blue and not breathing. Following first aid instructions over the phone, she bravely performed chest compressions on the child before the 115 team arrived.
Simultaneously, two emergency medical teams from the 115 Emergency Center arrived at the scene. Doctors and nurses continued intensive resuscitation, intubated the child, and provided oxygen via manual ventilation, helping the baby regain a healthy complexion and a clear pulse.
The baby was transferred to Children's Hospital 1, and the mother went to Tu Du Hospital.
Further investigation revealed that the mother had undergone an obstetric examination, which confirmed the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck twice, the amniotic fluid was low, and the expected delivery date was July 21st. The baby is currently receiving treatment in the hospital's intensive care unit.
The second case occurred on the morning of August 9th in Cat Lai ward. A pregnant woman, 31 weeks into her pregnancy, had just received medication to mature her lungs when her water unexpectedly broke and she went into labor while waiting for an ambulance.
The baby was born cyanotic and had a weak pulse. The family was immediately instructed by the 115 emergency response coordinator on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation remotely.
Two emergency teams from the satellite stations of Saigon General Hospital and Le Van Thinh Hospital also quickly arrived. The emergency team clamped the umbilical cord, administered intravenous fluids, and transferred the mother to Le Van Thinh Hospital and the baby to Children's Hospital 2. The baby's pulse is stable, but breathing is weak, and it is currently receiving oxygen in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Dr. Long stated that the two cases clearly demonstrate the importance of calling 115 immediately in emergency situations.
The 115 emergency hotline in Ho Chi Minh City not only coordinates medical personnel to arrive as quickly as possible, but also guides people on how to perform timely first aid, 24/7 – which can determine the patient's survival.
Doctor Long advises that in life-threatening situations, call 115 immediately. Remaining calm, trusting, and following instructions will help save your loved ones' lives.
