According to a report by the Korea Communications Commission, in the first five months of this year, the country recorded more than 168.6 million spam messages, accounting for over 50% of the total number of spam messages in 2023.
Korean authorities reported that the number of "spam" messages (including calls for stock investment, impersonating public organizations, and loan recommendations) has increased sharply, causing inconvenience to phone users.
The cyber terrorism investigation unit of the Korean National Police Agency said it is investigating individuals who stole personal information from open chat rooms on the KakaoTalk app, converted it into a database, and sold it.
The investigation targeted a large number of people involved in the data leak, ranging from hackers to representatives of mass messaging service companies.
