Essential goods prices are rising, people are cutting spending to stay in the city.

Some essential goods such as rice and electricity have had their prices adjusted up over the past year. Electricity prices have even increased twice in 2023, from VND1,864.44/kWh to VND2,006.79/kWh (excluding VAT).

Although it has been maintained quite stable, retail rice prices have also increased. In January 2023, non-glutinous rice cost VND12,500/kg, and Nang Nhen rice cost VND20,000/kg. However, by December 2023, non-glutinous rice increased by VND1,500/kg, while Nang Nhen rice increased by VND6,000/kg.

Not only essential goods, in the past year, the price of gold - one of the familiar investment channels of the people - also recorded a "dizzying" increase. From the beginning of January 2023 to December 27, 2023, this precious metal increased in price to 13.25 million VND/tael for buying and increased by 13.05 million VND/tael for selling.
