Hermès has just announced its first headphone model with a price of 15,000 USD (nearly 400 million VND). This figure is nearly 1.5 times the price that users have to pay to buy a popular car in Vietnam like VinFast VF3 (299 million VND).
The product was created by the Ateliers Horizons department, which specializes in bespoke luxury goods. The team of around 50 people, including designers, engineers and artisans, has created interesting products such as jukeboxes, turntables and lacquered wooden DJ tables, all under the Hermès brand.
The headphones are inspired by the iconic Kelly bag, with hand-stitched cowhide and polished metal. Production is expected to be extremely limited. This makes the headphones more than just a fashion accessory, a collectible. The move marks a new strategy for Hermès, expanding into the luxury personal technology market.
Creative Director Axel de Beaufort emphasizes that the headphones have a signature Hermès sound, not just the look. The product is designed for both Bluetooth and wired use. Color options include natural leather, black, brown, blue, and Hermès red. It has physical buttons, not touch controls.
Hermès positions its headphones as wearable art, which sets them apart from traditional audio brands like Bose, Sony, Sennheiser, and Apple. Rather than competing solely on specs, Hermès focuses on quality in craftsmanship.
However, specific specifications regarding the audio driver, Bluetooth connection standard, battery life, or supported codecs have not been announced yet. The fashion brand’s website does not mention anything technical. Hermès said they will start selling in limited quantities from “this summer”.
The French luxury brand has collaborated with Apple on the Apple Watch series several times in the past. The straps, combined with virtual watch faces, make them cost many times more than regular devices.
