According to the Institute of South Asian, West Asian and African Studies, the Mekong Delta is the largest agricultural and aquatic product granary in Vietnam, contributing 95% of rice exports, 65% of aquatic products and 70% of fruits nationwide. However, due to the lack of deep-sea ports, about 80% of the Mekong Delta's import and export goods must be transported by road to ports outside the region (Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria - Vung Tau). This increases logistics costs by about 170 USD per container (equivalent to 7-10 USD/ton), reducing the competitiveness of goods. Therefore, the construction of Tran De deep-water port in Can Tho City (formerly Soc Trang ), right at the mouth of the Hau River, is considered urgent, aiming to reduce 5-10% of logistics costs for agricultural products in the Mekong Delta and create momentum for regional economic development.
The workshop focused on discussing theoretical and practical issues on the development of Tran De coastal economic zone and Tran De seaport; forecasting demand, identifying opportunities and challenges for human resources serving Tran De coastal economic zone and Tran De seaport; proposing solutions to attract and train human resources for Tran De coastal economic zone and Tran De seaport in the future. Delegates also presented papers on the development prospects of Tran De seaport and forecasting human resource needs; training models and cooperation between schools - enterprises - local authorities to promote the development of Tran De marine economy; developing high-quality tourism human resources to serve Tran De seaport urban area with opportunities, challenges and policy orientations...
The above opinions are recorded and contribute to forecasting human resources to serve the development plan of Tran De Coastal Economic Zone in stages in the next 20-25 years; helping the locality proactively prepare a timely labor force in terms of quantity and quality, ensuring the smooth operation of the Tran De Coastal Economic Zone project and Tran De seaport, while contributing to the sustainable development of the marine economy for Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region.
