These figures for the export and import of publications in 2023-2024 and the first half of 2025 were released by the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution at a conference summarizing the export and import of publications for the period 2023-2025 and outlining key tasks, organized by the department on the afternoon of December 5th in Hanoi .
Reporting at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Bao - Deputy Director - stated that there are currently 28 units nationwide licensed to operate in the import and distribution of publications, including two specialized import units and 26 units with import functions.
Most of these businesses are small in scale and capacity, lacking initiative in promoting and cooperating with foreign businesses; they lack coordination when participating in foreign markets; and they have not proactively linked with publishers and distributors to exploit export sources.
Over the past two years, only 17 businesses have regularly received import orders, while the remaining 11 importing entities have had no orders and have not processed import procedures.
The total number of imports for 2023-2024 and the first six months of 2025 is nearly 182,000 titles, with a quantity of almost 14.8 million books.
Imported content is diverse and abundant in genre and language, primarily English, French, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Import markets are concentrated in countries such as the UK, USA, Australia, France, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, China, India, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, export activities have not seen any breakthroughs; currently, only five businesses regularly export abroad.
The total number of exported publications exceeded 1 million copies of books and CDs of various kinds; export revenue reached over 260,000 USD. The main export products were books introducing and promoting Vietnam and its people. Export markets consisted of small, individual orders such as Laos, Japan, the United States, and Australia.
At the conference, representatives from various organizations highlighted difficulties related to the market, copyright protection, and shipping costs that hinder the import and export of publications.
Mr. Nguyen Nguyen, Director of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution, said that he has attended many international book fairs and heard other organizations praise Vietnamese books for their beautiful designs. They are interested but don't know how to approach them.
Mr. Nguyen said that more discussions and workshops are needed to find solutions to overcome difficulties and to bring Vietnamese books and knowledge to the world , while ensuring that book imports comply with legal regulations.
